This service converts a phone number into easy to remember words.

Many telephone keypads have letters with the numbers, from which words, names, acronyms, abbreviations or alphanumeric combinations can be formed.
These words are known as phonewords. Phonewords are easier to remember than a meaningless sequence of numbers.

For example:
212-272-5263 becomes a-1-barb-lane

Businesses use phonewords in advertisements on television, billboard or radio.

There are different telephone keypads, each with a different number-letters mapping.
But most phones built today place letters on the phone keypad according to the ITU E.161 standard:

ITU E.161 standaard phone keypad

This service does not only convert a phone number to words, but it converts words into a phone number and convert a phone number to all letters combinations.

  2. Telephone number to words

Complete the following projects:

Standard telephone keypads contain the digits 0 through 9. The numbers 2 through 9

each have three letters associated with them, as is indicated by the following table:

Many people find it difficult to memorize phone numbers, so they use the

correspondence between digits and letters to develop seven-letter words that

correspond to their phone numbers. For example, a person whose telephone number

is 686-2377 might use the correspondence indicated in the above table to develop the

seven-letter word “NUMBERS.”

Businesses frequently attempt to get telephone numbers that are easy for their clients

to remember. If a business can advertise a simple word for its customers to dial, then

no doubt the business will receive a few more calls. Each seven-letter word

corresponds to exactly one seven-digit telephone number. The restaurant wishing to

increase its take-home business could surely do so with the number 825-3688 (i.e.,

“TAKEOUT”). Each seven-digit phone number corresponds to many separate sevenletter words. Unfortunately, most of these represent unrecognizable juxtapositions of

It is possible, however, that the owner of a barber shop would be pleased to

know that the shop’s telephone number, 424-7288, corresponds to “HAIRCUT.” A

veterinarian with the phone number 738-2273 would be pleased to know that the

number corresponds to “PETCARE.”

Write a program that, given a seven-digit number, writes to a file every possible sevenletter word corresponding to that number. User will provide the file name and

extension. There are 2187 (3 to the seventh power) such words. Avoid phone numbers

with the digits 0 and 1.

Assume that the file created above is now your local dictionary. Now modify your code

to look up the words in the dictionary. Some seven-letter combinations created by your

program consist of two or more words (e.g., the phone number 843-2677 produces

“THEBOSS”). User will provide the word and your program can respond positively if

the word is found.

In some programming languages, strings are entered surrounded by either single or

double quotation marks. Write a program that reads the three strings john, ‘john’,

“john”. Are the single and double quotes ignored by C or read as part of the string?

Now write a new method called clean_quotes that will remove all single quotes and

double quotes. Note: the program should NOT remove commas or apostrophe s.

For fun, I wrote a script to convert the last four digits (or fewer) of a phone number into a valid word. I wanted to see if my personal phone number could be converted into something like «999-9999-BEAR.» I used the unix words file as my dictionary.

I’m wondering how I could make this simpler, since there seems to be a lot of repetition within the function. I’d also like to expand it to consider more digits of the phone number.

I am mostly self taught with Python, so please let me know if I can do anything to make my code prettier!

import pandas as pd

Written by Allen Wyatt (last updated October 28, 2022)
This tip applies to Word 2007, 2010, 2013, 2016, 2019, and Word in Microsoft 365

Microsoft Word is used quite extensively in corporate environments to create a wide array of documents. It is often desirable to know exactly who created a document, particularly if it has been months since a document was last reviewed. In the document properties Word keeps track of some data that can be used to help identify an author. One piece of data that could be very helpful is the phone number of the document’s author. To specify a phone number, follow these steps if you are using Word 2010 or a later version:

  1. Click the File tab of the ribbon and make sure that Info is selected at the left side of the screen.
  2. Click the Properties drop-down list and choose Advanced Properties. Word displays the Properties dialog box for the document.
  3. Make sure the Custom tab is displayed. (See Figure 1.)
  4. Figure 1. The Custom tab of the Properties dialog box.

  5. In the list of properties at the top of the dialog box (listed in the Name control), choose Telephone Number.
  6. In the Value box, enter the phone number you want associated with the document.
  7. Click on Add.
  8. Click OK.
  9. Close the Document Information Panel.

If you are using Word 2007 the steps are a bit different:

  1. Click the Office button, then click Prepare, and then Properties. Word displays the Document Information Panel at the top of your document, just below the ribbon.
  2. Use the Document Properties drop-down list (top-left corner of the Document Information Panel) to choose Advanced Properties. Word displays the Properties dialog box for the document.
  3. Make sure the Custom tab is displayed.
  4. In the list of properties at the top of the dialog box (listed in the Name control), choose Telephone Number.
  5. In the Value box, enter the phone number you want associated with the document.
  6. Click on Add.
  7. Click OK.
  8. Close the Document Information Panel.
