First of all, it is a noun which means it’s technically a place and a thing, but google tells me you never capitalize city because: •City is a common noun •City is only capitalized at the start of the sentence •It’s only capitalized when classified a proper noun including it with another word/name for e.g. New York City.

It’s capitalized when it’s the first word of a sentence and when it’s a word in the name of the city itself, like New York City or Salt Lake City. You don’t when it’s just used as a noun, like “The city doesn’t have many residents.”
