I have a user who cannot save or save as in Word 2007. When saving it seems to refresh the desktop and also makes the «Critical Stop» wave sound . You also cannot browse to change the default save location, no browse window ever pops up. This happens with
other profiles as well. I have tried the following steps:Repair Office 2007
Reinstall Office 2007
Upgrade to Office 2010
Repair Office 2010
Renamed Normal.dotm
Tried safe mode
Any ideas? Next move is to re-image.
Thanks in Advance.

For what it’s worth, reinstalling Word rarely fixes any issues (because registry entries and some installation files will be retained).

When «Save» or «Save As», I get a following error in MS Word 2019 — in
a yellow bar —
(A) Make sure you have permission to the folder where you are trying to save. Generally you cannot save in someone else’s user; Program Files folder; Windows; or other secured folder.
(B) If not (A), try an Office Repair (Control Panel, Programs and Features, click on Office, Change, Repair).
(C) If not (B), uninstall Office, restart the computer and install Office again and test.
This does assume the Word file is good — most are.
(D) Other steps and thoughts.
Once files are closed, you can repair a Word document (if not lost) by selecting Open and Repair when you open the document.
You may be able to copy text and paste it into a new document you can save. Do that and make sure you have a copy of most of or all of what you need.
Finally, Word (and Excel) have Auto Recover functions (Word Options). You can look there if you have to close Word.

Template or Driver Fault Good Morning Don, Usually when a document number increases by one, you are using a template file rather than a document file? If the file type has yellow at the top of the icon then this is a template file. Open the document, click on file save as, but at the bottom change the file type to ‘Word Document’. I’m sure you’re aware of the above, therefore it must be a driver fault which is a little more difficult to track down. When using safe mode it limits the amount of drivers that word will use. Have you recently installed a new program? It may be that this driver is affecting the way that Microsoft Word works? To stop drivers from loading, you will have to stop and start several to find out which one is causing the problem, try the following information http://www.microsoft.com/resources/d….mspx?mfr=true Hope this helps. |

The documents are not templates. It I attempt a Save As it immediatly returns to the document. If I attempt a Save it aldo reurns to the document and does not save. I am not aware of any programs recently installed except for the common updates. Thanks for your reply, Don |

Hi Don, Sorry I cannot be of any more assistance. It maybe best to remove office/word from your complete system, then reboot and then reinstall. Hope this helps, and good luck. |

Nothing workd so I called Microsoft Activation Help . After giving control of my compuer to them they removed the Registry settings for Office, removed Office and reinstalled. It did not solve the probem and the symptoms were that Excel and Access were fine, but when opening a Word Document the header indicated in the header someting about not activated. However, using File | Help in Word showed Office as Activated. The Microsoft person then added a new User to my system and while booted to the new User uninstalled add reinstalled Office. That solved the problem. I have idea why! Don |

Hi Don, Pleased that you have managed to get it sorted, even if you had to phone Microsoft themselves. Thank you for letting me know the solution, as I now appreciate that it is probably a failed user account. I will bear this in mind for the future. Please be kind enough to mark this as ‘solved’ — thanks. |

I have no idea how this suddenly happened. Apparently the Microsoft Support person did not suspect that was the problem. He got around it by generating a new User and reinstalling Word while logged on to the new User. This created a new default save folder with the necessary permissions. As soon as I deleted the new User the problem had returned and it took a long time to discover what had mysteriously happened. Don

My Word 2003 can open existing Word documents, but it will not save any
document, or do a «save as» for any document. This problem occurs for
documents in either local or network folders.
No error message is displayed — in fact, nothing happens. This happens
whether I open an existing document or do a new/blank document.
I can create a document in Word Pad and save it. I can then open that same
document in Word, but I cannot save it.
If it were a permissions problem, I would expect an error message. Clearly
it is not a permissions problem for the files I try to save since I can open
them and save them via Word Pad.
I tried doing a «Help|Detect and Repair», but that did not fix the problem.
I can successfully open and save documents in other MS Office programs (like
Excel, Access) to both local and network folders — but I realize those
programs have their own settings. separate from Word. No changes have been
made to my computer (other than Microsoft Updates).
Googling this problem results in finding several people over the years who
have had the same problem, but I did not find a conclusive solution. Several
of the people who reported the same problem reported that they reinstalled
Word but that still did not fix the problem.
My version of Word is 2003 (11.8313.8221) SP3
Any suggestions for solving this problem?
Thanks!

I forgot to mention that this is a full, licensed version of Word 2003 that
has been working fine for years until this month.

You could try exiting Word and deleting the Normal.dot template and
restarting Word. This will cause Word to create a new «clean» Normal
template. This has worked successfully for me several times with my end
users. Keep in mind, however, that you will lose any customizations that you
have made to Word (i.e. toolbar buttons, styles, etc.)

That’s why it’s suggested that you not _delete_ the normal.dot
template, but _rename_ it. Then if the problem is solved, you can copy
over your customizations; and if it isn’t, you can go back to the
customized one.

I found the cause of this problem.
In the registry I discovered that the key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerUser
Shell FoldersCache
Was pointing to a drive I did not have. How this got changed I do not know,
but it somehow got changed sometime during the past month.
I changed it to what I believe is the correct location of:
%USERPROFILE%Local SettingsTemporary Internet Files
After making this change Word is working normally.
Thanks to the others who offered their ideas.
