Google docs is the word processor offered by Google which is slowly getting more and more attention by the users.

In addition to the basic and important functionalities of any word processor, Google Docs offers us with a seamless sharing which is definitely a special mention in comparison with other word processors.

A situation may arise when we need to work offline or want to edit our document in MICROSOFT WORD which is of course older and more advanced than GOOGLE DOCS as of now.

In this situation, we must be able to open our google docs document in MICROSOFT WORD.

So, in this article, we’ll learn to open a google docs document in microsoft word.

WHY TO OPEN THE GOOGLE DOCS DOCUMENT IN MICROSOFT WORD?

The reasons can be many such as

  • We want to work offline.
  • we want to work in microsoft word for some additional options present only in microsoft word.
  • we want to export the document to microsoft word.

and many more.

STEPS TO CONVERT GOOGLE DOCS DOCUMENT TO MICROSOFT WORD DOCUMENT TYPE

The process is divided into two steps.

  1. Convert the standard google docs document into Microsoft Word format i.e. [.docx]
  2. Open it with Microsoft Word.

CONVERT THE STANDARD GOOGLE DOCS DOCUMENT TO MICROSOFT WORD DOCUMENT.

Let us take an example file as shown in the picture below.

Follow the steps to save the google docs document in MS WORD format.

  • Go to FILE MENU.
  • Choose DOWNLOAD > MICROSOFT WORD (.docx).
CHOOSE DOWNLOAD .DOCX
  • As we choose the format MS WORD , a dialog box asking to save the file will appear. [ The dialog box can be different as per the browser. Mine is firefox and saving it it the default location. You can choose the location ].
  • Save the file in the location of your choice.
  • The file will be in the word format.
  • Double click the file to open it in MSWORD.

OTHER WAY TO CONVERT THE GOOGLE DOCS DOCUMENT INTO MS WORD

One more option is to convert the file into MS WORD format and mail it directly to the recipients.

For the example, we’ll take the same document as shown in the picture below.

STEPS TO E MAIL THE GOOGLE DOCS DOCUMENT IN THE MS WORD FORMAT

  • Open the document which you want to convert and send.
  • Go to FILE MENU.
  • Choose Email > Email this file.
CHOOSE EMAIL THIS FILE

As we click, choose email this file, another dialog box will open as shown in the picture below.

The different options available in the dialog box are:

MARKING NO. DESCRIPTION
1 Enter all the EMAIL ADDRESSES in this field to whom you want to send this mail with attached document.
2 SUBJECT: Enter the subject of the mail. The subject will be picked up from the document name by default which can be changed manually.
3 Content of the email. You can write a few lines for the recipients.
4 CHECK BOX. If checked, the content of the documents will be put inside the email content without attaching it as a file. This is helpful if we have written email body in Google Docs and we want to directly send it as a mail.
5 Choose the format of the attachment. For our case, it’ll be MS WORD [.docx]. [Shown in the picture below] *
6 After all the settings , click SEND.

The document will be attached as MS WORD file and sent to the recipients.

The attachment can be downloaded and opened in MS WORD.

After clicking the SEND BUTTON, the mail will be sent.

Let us check the email if it arrived correctly or not.

Click on the download button to save the file as shown in the picture below.

After clicking the download button, the default file saving dialog box of your browser will appear.

Choose location and click save.

My browser is firefox, which is asing me to OPEN FILE, OR SAVE IT as shown in the picture below.

I chose, save file, it’ll save the file in the default location which can be changed from the OPTIONS of the browser.

SAVE FILE.

After the file is saved, we can open it in the MS WORD and edit it as per our choice.

While Google Docs is growing in popularity, you may still need to work with Microsoft Word. Fortunately Google Docs can save as DOCX. Use these steps to save a Google Docs file in the .docx file format.

  1. Open your Google Docs file.
  2. Click the File tab at the top-left.
  3. Choose Download, then Microsoft Word (.docx).

Google Docs is great for online collaboration because you can easily share a file with other Google users and edit the document together. Those documents can be edited in a number of ways, like if you want to insert PDF into Google Doc files as a link that people can click, or if you wanted to incorporate and edit images in your documents.

But you may need to submit the file for work or school in a specific file format, such as .docx.

The .docx file format is the default one used by newer versions of Microsoft Word. If you have a .docx file you can open and edit it in Microsoft Word.

Because Google Docs uses its own proprietary online format, you aren’t able to open the original file in Microsoft Word. However, you can easily download the Google Docs file in the .docx file format so that it is compatible with Word.

How to Save a Google Docs File as a DOCX File

The steps in this article were performed in the desktop version of the Google Chrome Web browser, but will also work in other desktop browsers like Firefox or Edge.

Step 1: Sign into Google Drive and open your Google Doc.

Step 2: Select the File tab at the top-left of the window.

Depending on your browser settings, you may then be prompted to choose a file location. If not, then .docx version of the Google Doc will download to your default Downloads folder.

You will still have the original Google Docs file in your Google Drive. This method simply creates a copy of the file in the Microsoft Word file format.
