It says I can’t save because «XML WORD PROCESSING FORMAT» just upgraded mac mini to Mavericks and just downloaded numbers and still can’t save file. I need to work on this document. What do I need to do/get to make this work now and in the future?

That’s pretty confusing. Excel is a spreadsheet. Word is a word processor. A spreadsheet document generally can’t «revert» to a word processing document. They’re two different animals.
Have you checked with the person who sent you the email attachment? In Excel for the Mac you can save in these formats among others:
As you can see, .xml is a native Excel format, but an old on. (More recent formats have xml within them but don’t have .xml as a file suffix). What is the file suffix on your attachment?
If you can determine whether the attachment is a spreadsheet or word processing document you could download one of open source Office clones and try to open it with those. But it might be easier just to have the sender give you a recent Excel format and File > Open that with Numbers.

devil,
can you share what you are trying to do? Your titled indicates «…save excel spreadsheet to numbers.» Which I interprest as you want to open an excel spreadsheet in Numbers. Excel cannot save to a Numbers file format.
Top open an excel file in Numbers drag the excel file onto the Numbers icon in the doc or, while in Numbers, select the menu item «File > Open» and navigate to, and select, the excel file you would like to edit.
When you are done editing, the only way to save the work as excel is to export using the menu item ‘File > Export To… > Excel»

Here’s what I’m trying to do. I have an email attachment that I need to work on. I am trying to save it into numbers so I can work on it. I downloaded numbers because that’s what Apple told me I needed to convert excel. It won’t let me do it because doesn’t support XML format. So what do I need to do to save this file to my computer so I can work on it?
I have a microsoft laptop, but it has windows xp and havn’t fired it up in years. Tried it today and too outdated to do anything with.

Drag the file from the mail to your desktop and then open using Text Edit, or Text Wrangler
Text Wrangler is free from the App store.
XML is a file type that excel can save as but is not really an excel file.

Wayne, I can’t send the file to you, it’s confidential. I tried that and it didn’t work. The file is locked and wen I unlock it the excel format goes away, in otherwords it reverts to a word format. The original file has colored boxes which I can see if I preview but goes away when I try the steps you suggested.
There has to be a program I can install that I can simply save the file to my desktop and it converts for me. Never had a problem with microsoft. I love Ap[ple, but they make it so confusing some time.
Will office for Mac do that? is that the same as office for microsoft? the reviews aren’t that good and tired of spending money that doesn’t work

Looking at that list, I’m wondering if the file Todd received is an .xlsm document. Numbers does not support Excel macros, and might choke on opening such a file.

Open Up
Start by opening your document in Numbers. We’ve got a home insurance document that includes charts, tables and images. Head to the File menu and select Save As, making sure to check the Save copy as box, and choose Excel Document from the menu.
An Alternative Option
For more control, select Export from the Share menu in Numbers. Select the Excel tab and choose to include a summary worksheet or not. This will be added to the first page of your Excel document and will explain its origin. Next you can select a destination to save the file to.
Warning Signs
When exporting your file to Excel format, a warning screen appears. This screen displays all potential errors or changes that need to be made in order to export successfully to an Excel document. Clicking on each warning will highlight the element in your document.
Open in Excel
If you have Excel, you can check the outcome of your Numbers export; if not, note that each table in Numbers will be made into an Excel worksheet and a worksheet will be created for each element. If you opted to include it, a summary sheet will explain each of them.
Formula Fixes
Formulas tend to go awry when exporting a Numbers document for use in Excel. If you can, check each formula within the Excel document to make sure they’re working; that, or remove the formulas from the original document and note where to add them later.

The simpler the spreadsheet, the more your file will resemble what you created in Excel.
- That’s it. The Excel file should open in Numbers.
Before you start working on your spreadsheet, look it over carefully. Formatting may have changed, especially with charts. Check to make sure the formulas you are using are intact. There’s always a chance that so much happened during the import that you can’t use your spreadsheet.
How to export Apple Numbers files as Microsoft Excel spreadsheets
If you’ve been working in Numbers and will eventually return to Excel, you can export your spreadsheet as an Excel file. Here’s how.
- In Numbers, click on the File menu and move your cursor to “Export to.”
- A pop-up menu will appear. Select Excel.
- In the Export Your Spreadsheet window that appears next, you can opt to include a summary worksheet and require a password. Click on Advanced Options, and you can select between .xlsx and .xls file formats. Click Next when you have finished selecting your options.
- Choose where you want to save the file and name it.
- When you click Export, this will save the file.

Numbers that are stored as text can cause unexpected results, like an uncalculated formula showing instead of a result. Most of the time, Excel will recognize this and you’ll see an alert next to the cell where numbers are being stored as text. If you see the alert, select the cells, and then click

Just be sure the cells you select are in the same column, otherwise this process won’t work. (See «Other ways to convert» below if you have this problem in more than one column.)
2. Click this button
The Text to Columns button is typically used for splitting a column, but it can also be used to convert a single column of text to numbers. On the Data tab, click Text to Columns.
3. Click Apply
The rest of the Text to Columns wizard steps are best for splitting a column. Since you’re just converting text in a column, you can click Finish right away, and Excel will convert the cells.
4. Set the format
Press CTRL + 1 (or 
+ 1 on the Mac). Then select any format.
Note: If you still see formulas that are not showing as numeric results, then you may have Show Formulas turned on. Go to the Formulas tab and make sure Show Formulas is turned off.
Other ways to convert:
You can use the VALUE function to return just the numeric value of the text.
1. Insert a new column
Insert a new column next to the cells with text. In this example, column E contains the text stored as numbers. Column F is the new column.
2. Use the VALUE function
In one of the cells of the new column, type =VALUE() and inside the parentheses, type a cell reference that contains text stored as numbers. In this example it’s cell E23.
3. Rest your cursor here
Now you’ll fill the cell’s formula down, into the other cells. If you’ve never done this before, here’s how to do it: Rest your cursor on the lower-right corner of the cell until it changes to a plus sign.
4. Click and drag down
Click and drag down to fill the formula to the other cells. After that’s done, you can use this new column, or you can copy and paste these new values to the original column. Here’s how to do that: Select the cells with the new formula. Press CTRL + C. Click the first cell of the original column. Then on the Home tab, click the arrow below Paste, and then click Paste Special > Values.
If the steps above didn’t work, you can use this method, which can be used if you’re trying to convert more than one column of text.

Select a blank cell that doesn’t have this problem, type the number 1 into it, and then press Enter.

Press CTRL + C to copy the cell.

Select the cells that have numbers stored as text.

On the Home tab, click Paste > Paste Special.

Click Multiply, and then click OK. Excel multiplies each cell by 1, and in doing so, converts the text to numbers.

Press CTRL + 1 (or
+ 1 on the Mac). Then select any format.
