Question
-
I have recently installed Microsoft Office Standard on my new laptap which runs Windows 7 Professional. When i am in Word and trying to send the document as an email attachment, I received an error dialogue box with the message «Word couldn’t send
email because of MAPI failure: «Unspecified error».» I clicked on the help button and have tried all the steps but no avail. The work around is to open Outlook and create an email with an attachment. This works BUT I would like to be able to use Word as it was designed. Anyone have a similar issue and suggested correction?
Thanks!

Can’t Send Attachment in Word 2016 Through Thunderbird — Help
I cant send mail as an open attachement in word 2016 through thunderbird. When I try to, Word gives an error.
So just to give you steps into the problem:
1. I open up the doc.
2. While its still open, in Word I go to File>Share>Email>Send As Attachment.
3. TB loads in the background.
4. I get this message in Word: «Word couldn’t send mail because of mapi failure: attachment not found»Just to let you know, I have no problem sending this as a PDF when I choose the «Send as PDF» option in Word. How do I fix it so that I’m able to send as Word attactment through TB?
** PLEASE DO NOT SAY THIS IS A THUNDERBIRD ISSUE. I’VE SEEN MANY PEOPLE COMPLAIN ABOUT THE SAME ISSUE AND IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THUNDERBIRD. ITS PURELY A WORD ISSUE.***

It could also be a website issue, due to the issues in recent years with word macro viruses some company mail servers are set-up to reject DOC & DOCx documents as well as things like DOTx and even XLSx. some are also set to not even send out a failure message (spammers often use the refusal message to show an address is «Live» and concentrate other methods
It’s unlikely in your case but may be worth a check

This used to be a common known issue with 3rd party clients and older versions of Office (not sure about 2016). Some documentation I have come across points to modifying a MAPI registry entry as a fix.
Have a look at these to see if anything helps:

I dabble with VBA and write and maintain several amateur Word Add-Ins. Accordingly, I have Word 2003, 2007, 2010 and 2013 installed on my PC. They get along fine. However, I am unable to «Share» or «Send» an open Word
document as an E-mail attachment in any version! In each case Word returns an error mesage «Word couldn’t send mail because of a MAPI failure, Unspecified error (the same issue occurs with Excel and Powerpoint except the error dialog is a bit different.)
Using Word 2003, I (CAN) «Send to (Mail recipient for review)» in which case OUTLOOK is opened with the document as an attachment. I can also «Send to Mail Recipient» from Windows Explorer, in which case the Word file is attached to
an OUTLOOK message, and I can create an instance of OUTLOOK and send mail from Word using VBA.
I have repaired all Office versions. I have removed the registry keys for all office versions and repaired all versions again. I have run «fixmapi» until I am blue in the face. I have renamed the MAPI32.DLL files and ran sfc scannow
to ensure that the MAPI32.DLL file is not corrupt. In view of these actions and in view of what I can do, something tells me that the MAPI files are fine.
So what is this «Unspecified error?» This problem is rife on the internet and most of the «canned» solutions have been marked «Answered» by some MS support engineer. These «canned» solutions might have
fixed the issue at one point, but they don’t work now. At least not for me.
Thanks.

I assume send as pdf sends the file as the message body using Thunderbird, not an attachment. If that works I’d assume the SimpleMAPI registry keys are probably okay.
Can you drag and drop the file to the attachment area (upper right corner, to the right of the headers) of the Thunderbird compose message window? If you do can you send it? While you could do that as a workaround, the main reason I ask is to help troubleshoot whats wrong.

No send as PDF means it sends as a PDF attachment.

Why would I drag and drop a word attachment to a compose message if theres no problem with that? My issue is that I cant send mail as an open attachement WITHIN word 2016 through thunderbird. I strongly suggest you go through the steps in recreating the issue I posted in my first post. Appreciate the help.

I did read a recent report from a user who could connect to TB to send as attachment from Excel or Powerpoint, but not Word.

really? Wow… The only thing I can do is send it within Word as a PDF not a doc connecting TB. Theres got to be a solution to this. Its vitally needed.

Perhaps there’s a terminology issue here. The process steps you listed above successfully adds the selected file to a message in a compose window, showing it as an attachment in the attachment panel to the right of the address entry block. That’s the same result achieved by dragging a file to the right side of the address entry field or menu path Attach->File.
What do you mean by «open attachment»?

Ok, I outlined easy steps which I dont think is too hard to follow but I’ll say it a different way: Say you open a Word doc. You want to send it as an attachment from Word. You go to File>Share>Email>Send As Attachment in Word. TB then loads up. But TB cant send it as an attachment cuz Word pops up an error saying: «Word couldn’t send mail because of mapi failure: attachment not found.»
Of course you can drag and drop an attachment in the TB compose message. Thats not the problem. The problem is that I cant send Word doc attachments from Word from the above steps through TB. All I can send through this method are PDFs.

Didn’t say it was too hard to follow and, if you go back and read my post carefully, you’ll see that I found no problem at all attaching a .docx file to a message using the process you described above. So it sounds as though the issue may be one of settings in the Windows Registry rather than anything specific to Thunderbird itself.

Hey dan I think you may be right! There have been several people who have hinted that it may be a registry issue.. Thanks man
