User accounts on the platform can be removed if they use banned words on Twitch whether they are a streamer or not. To protect yourself, refrain from using language that is strictly prohibited. This includes hateful slurs, racial slurs, insults, violent speech, and more.

This post will cover all the things you can’t say within the Twitch community.

What Can’t You Say on Twitch?

Twitch streamers can be banned for discriminatory speech, threats to harm themselves or others, and general harassment. They can also find themselves in trouble if sharing another’s personal information, impersonating Twitch staff, or any speech with the intent of taking advantage of others.Ezoic

Twitch Banned Words

Offensive speech is defined by words and conversations that promote or encourage discrimination. Harassment, hate speech, or violent speech that is based on the following:

  • ethnicity or race
  • religious beliefs
  • gender
  • gender identity
  • sexual orientation can result in a suspension
  • inciting violence in any way

Other bannable offenses include abuse against people due to their medical conditions, disabilities, physical characteristics, age, or veteran status.

Depending on the severity of the offense, your account can be indefinitely suspended even on a first offense. Your best bet is to treat everyone with respect in action and words.

Specific Words That Are Banned On Twitch

As of December 16, 2020, Twitch has outlawed the usage of the words “virgin,” “simp,” and “incel” on their platform – both in chat and by the streamer.

Twitch now says that you can no longer call others ‘simp’, ‘incel’, and ‘virgin’ as they are now against TOS, along with any emotes relating to the term simp

Twitch baby, what is you doing?

— Rod Breslau (@Slasher) December 16, 2020

Additionally, you can no longer use the term or command !blind when you are playing through a game for the first time and don’t want any hints.

Words You Can’t Say on Twitch

One of the most common derogatory terms used on Twitch are variances of racial and homophobic slurs. Some streamers/gamers claim that they didn’t intend to offend anyone with the speech.

You don’t know who is watching. You don’t know the histories of every one of your fans. While you and your friends might realize that you are “joking,” you don’t know if certain terms or words have affected people negatively in their pasts.

If your account is suspended, you will generally have the right to appeal. Typical bans can last between 1-30 days but can be indefinite if the infringement was terrible. While many complain that bans based on speech go against freedom of speech laws, Twitch, Mixer, and other platforms are legally allowed to create guidelines and moderate chat. As corporations, they must look out for their brand. Turning a blind eye toward certain terms and phrases could bring them under scrutiny.

There are times when trolls will visit your chat. You must learn to deal with them professionally. Retaliation against them can get you into trouble. That being said, you can take preventative measures to minimize the written attacks.

How to Ban Certain Words in Your Chat

You can create your own list of banned words in your creator dashboard on Twitch by completing the following steps:

  1. Step 1

From your channel settings, click “Moderation” on the menu on the left-hand side.

  2. Step 2

    Select “Blocked Terms and Phrases.”

  3. Step 3

Set up words and phrases which will automatically be blocked in chat. Make sure to include similar and misspellings of the words as well.

Your mods will also be able to easily ban words using Twitch’s Mod View.

Additionally, you can customize a Twitch chatbot to help moderate your chat. Taking these steps upfront can prevent a lot of spammy trolling which will ensure that you and your community continue to have a good time.

Threats of Violence

On Twitch, there is zero-tolerance toward violent threats. Any account found to be in violation of this rule can be banned indefinitely. The rules include threatening (or attempting) to physically harm or kill yourself or others. Even if not verbally stated, the intent (even if it a joke) to intimidate others with weapons or damaging threats can get you in trouble.

If you are genuinely feeling suicidal or homicidal, we urge you to get help. Find a hotline in your country or reach out to a friend or family member who can direct you to the help you need.

The Clip That Got Dellor Banned from r/LivestreamFail

Dellor got banned from Twitch for having a meltdown and breaking a keyboard over his head. While it isn’t the first time he has broken his own property, his account was suspended because it involved physically hitting himself.

While not physically violent, spreading malware or viruses misinformation (as well as anything else that could be harmful to property) can also result in a ban.

Don’t Dox Other Streamers: No Sharing Private Information

Streamers can be banned from invading the privacy of others. This includes sharing personal information or their property without their permission. It also includes filming them when they have asked you to stop. At TwitchCon 2019, Yuber walked up to a Twitch employee and started speaking to her. She asked not to be filmed, but he kept the camera focused on her and then ran away when he realized she worked for Twitch. His account received a temporary ban.

The internet isn’t always a safe place and sharing information can get you or anther person into actual danger from deranged fans with malicious intent. For that reason, refrain from letting your viewers know private information about others.

These include the person’s name, age, location, or any other identifying factors. It can include spreading personal information or messages that was supposed to be kept private or things posted on their personal social media accounts.

While you may be an open book, some people prefer to broadcast anonymously. Allow them to do so.

Don’t Scam or Spam People on Twitch

Your account can be banned if you spam people by repeatedly sending or saying large amounts of unwanted messages. This can be very annoying or count as harassment.

If you purposely mislead people with incorrect information about yourself, your channel, or your broadcasting platform, you can be banned.

hacker

You can also be banned for trying to scam or defraud people. Twitch and Mixer do not want to be held responsible for your malicious intent.

Lastly, if you pretend to be a representative for your broadcasting platform, you will be banned indefinitely.

Discord Friends Need to Follow Twitch Rules Too

If you are playing with a group of friends, let them know that you are streaming and ask them to moderate their speech. There have been cases where accounts have been banned for content that wasn’t necessarily the streamer’s fault. While these are often overturned, it is better to be safe than sorry. If one of your friends continually breaks rules, don’t play with them while you are streaming or mute them if they are in the channel.

It should be noted that breaking the rules on other Twitch services can also result in a ban on Twitch.

Don’t Play Copyrighted Music or Movies on Twitch

While this doesn’t involve your speech, playing copyrighted music or watching movies can get your account muted or banned. This is due to DMCA laws that are set up to protect the original artists of those mediums.

If you have messed up numerous times, it may be a good idea to learn how to change Twitch name. Sponsors may not be willing to work with you if you are associated with a name with bad press.

Conclusion

While you should always avoid using the banned words on Twitch, several lingo words can keep you as a part of the community. You can even use “Twitch-approved insults” like Malding when talking to each other on stream as long as you are not being overly toxic.

Every streamer has words that they are ok with in their chat and words that they are not ok with. In this article I go over how to ban words on Twitch and how to see words that you or your mods have already banned on Twitch.

To ban a word on Twitch:

  1. Click on your profile icon and then go to your “Creator Dashboard”
  2. Now on the left side click on “Settings” and then click “Moderation”
  3. Under “AutoMod Controls” click on “Blocked terms and phrases”
  4. In the box that says “Enter words or phrases” type in the word or phrase you want banned
  5. Click “Add”

Once you do this the word or phrase that you typed in will be added to your list of words and phrases that are banned from being used in your Twitch chat. I’ll show you how to view this list further down.

If you don’t want your mods to see the word or phrase you have banned, maybe you want to ban your personal info for example, then set the banned word to “Private” before adding it so that way only you can view it.

Here are some screen shots to help give some more detail on how to ban a word.

Click on your profile icon and then go to your “Creator Dashboard”

Profile Icon And Creative Dashboard

Now on the left side click on “Settings” and then click “Moderation”. Under “AutoMod Controls” click on “Blocked terms and phrases”.

Settings > Moderation > Blocked Terms And Phrases

In the box that says “Enter words or phrases” type in the word or phrase you want banned. Click “Add”.

Typed In Word And Add Button

Now what I recommend doing is adding all the words you do not want in your Twitch chat to this list. It’s a one time thing, but it makes moderating your chat a lot easier.

For example, I am a family friendly streamer and so I went in one day and added all the cuss words, racial slurs and banned Twitch words that I could think of to this list.

It took a few minutes to do, but now Twitch will automatically block these words from appearing in my Twitch chat and so neither myself nor my mods have to worry about them anymore.

And if you do decide to allow lots of freedom in regards to what is said on your stream then I suggest you label your stream as mature content. I go over how to do that in the video below if you are curious.

Also, I suggest that you don’t add any of your personal information to the list of banned words.

In theory this seems like a good idea right? If someone discovers your address or phone number this would prevent them from spamming it out in your chat right?

Well yes, but you must also consider that if someone types in your phone number in chat, and that phone number is a banned word, then you just confirmed to them that this is indeed your actual phone number.

In my opinion if that ever happens it is best to just play it off and then secretly ban the user from your stream. This way no attention is called to the user and you remove the nuisance without completely giving away your personal info.

Again, that is just my personal opinion but I think you should at least consider it before you outright ban some of your personal info from being seen in chat.

Now if you want to see your list of banned words this is how you would do it.

How To See Your List Of Banned Words On Twitch

  1. Click on your profile icon and then go to your “Creator Dashboard”
  2. Now on the left side click on “Settings” and then click “Moderation”
  3. Under “AutoMod Controls” click on “Blocked terms and phrases”
  4. Scroll down and you will see your list of banned words and phrases

This is what it will look like:

Click on your profile icon and then go to your “Creator Dashboard”

Profile Icon And Creator Dashboard

Now on the left side click on “Settings” and then click “Moderation”. Under “AutoMod Controls” click on “Blocked terms and phrases”

Settings > Moderation > Blocked Terms And Phrases

Scroll down and you will see your list of banned words and phrases

My List Of Banned Words

As you can see I have blocked some of the things that people have spammed in my stream, and then below that are some naughty words I have blocked out to keep it clean up in here.

If you want to edit a banned word or phrase all you have to do is click on the pencil icon located to the right of the banned word or phrase and then adjust it accordingly.

When you edit a word or phrase you can also choose who can see the banned word. “Public” means your moderators can see the banned word, “Private” means only you can see the banned word or phrase.

To remove a banned word or phrase from your list just click on the trashcan icon to the right of the banned word or phrase and the banned word or phrase will be deleted.

Now constantly having to add and remove words from your banned words list can be cumbersome. Luckily, Twitch has an automod feature to help you moderate chat and to censor words you may have forgot to ban.

How To Enable AutoMod On Twitch

  1. Click on your profile icon and then go to your “Creator Dashboard”
  2. Now on the left side click on “Settings” and then click “Moderation”
  3. Under “AutoMod Controls” click on “AutoMod Rulesets”
  4. Now adjust your settings and then click save in the bottom left

Here are some screen shots that go into more detail:

Click on your profile icon and then go to your “Creator Dashboard”

Profile Icon And Creator Dashboard

Now on the left side click on “Settings” and then click “Moderation”. Under “AutoMod Controls” click on “AutoMod Rulesets”

Settings > Moderation > AutoMod Rulesets

Now adjust your settings and then click save in the bottom left

My AutoMod Settings

The way the automod works is that any time a users types something in chat that may be offensive it will be flagged and it will be up to a mod or the streamer to decide if the word or phrase will be allowed.

And the higher up you have the filters turned the more words and phrases the automod will flag for you to review.

For example, since I have the “Swearing” filter turned up to “Maximum filtering” it flags all kinds of words, even words such as “fart” or “butt”.

However, once my mod or I approve the word to be used in chat it is moved to the approved words list and the automod will no longer flag that word when it appears in chat.

Again you can scale the filter up or down depending on how intense you want the automod to be. Like I said previously I tend to stream family friendly and so I have my automod filters dialed fairly high.

Can You See The List Of Banned Words For Other Twitch Streamers?

You can’t see the list of banned words on other channels unless you are a mod for that channel. Streamers will typically set broad rules for what type of language they are comfortable with on their streams, but almost none go into specifics.

However, these broad guidelines that streamers set forth for their streams are typically pretty easy to follow.

If a streamer has a rule stating, “No Racism” it is pretty clear what type of language is acceptable in their stream. Or if a streamer says “No Profanity”, again, pretty obvious right?

If you need help setting up the chat rules for your stream then check out my video below.

How To Ban Profanity On Twitch

To ban profanity on Twitch go into the chat settings by clicking on the cog wheel at the bottom of chat. Click “Chat Filters” and then click “Enable filtering in chat” at the top. Now toggle on “Profanity” and any profanity will now be filtered from your Twitch chat.

Cog Wheel And Chat Filters
Enable Filtering In Chat

Keep in mind that turning on the chat filter will not catch every bad word, especially if someone spells a bad word in a different way, but it will definitely filter out most bad words.

You can also adjust the chat filter to filter out words or phrases that are sexually explicit, hostile or discriminatory.

But keep in mind that filtering the chat for profane or otherwise inappropriate language will not change what is being said by the streamer. The filter only effects the chat itself.

Now if you are a streamer and want to ban profanity or other types of language from your chat then just follow everything that has been talked about above regarding banning words and automodding on Twitch.

How To Remove The Profanity Filter On Twitch

To remove the profanity filter on Twitch go into the chat settings by clicking on the cog wheel at the bottom of chat. Click “Chat Filters” and then turn off “Enable filtering in chat” at the top. If you keep the chat filter enabled just toggle off “Profanity”.

Toggle Off Profanity

Like was already mentioned, you can choose what type of language you want to see in Twitch chat by adjusting the filters. The filters aren’t perfect, but they are better than nothing.

If you want to know how to ban words on streaming softwares such as Streamlabs or OBS then check out my article here.

If you need help deciding on chat rules for your own stream then check out my article here.

Online platforms may seem more liberated than other regular businesses, but they do require certain regulations.

Twitch ToS Banned words

On Twitch, just like on any other platform, you need to be respectful toward the community. Here are the words that are banned on Twitch:

  1. Simp
  2. Incel
  3. Virgin

Additionally, you can’t use:

  1. Violent language
  2. Insults
  3. Stereotypes
  4. Treat others as inferior
  5. Be politically exclusive
  6. Spread ideologies
  7. Spread hate

You are probably a member of such a platform and you fear the sanctions if you make a mistake. But, do not worry everything you need to know is right here.

What Can’t You Say on Twitch

Banned Words on Twitch

We will try to briefly explain to you what Twitch banned words entail if you do not have the time to go through the regulations on their official website.

Generally, on any platform, you are not allowed to judge anyone based on their sexual preferences, gender identity, or ethnic characteristics.

This is related to the common knowledge of the discriminating utterances and actions, which you will have to apply on this platform as well.

1. Violent Language

Twitch does not allow for their streamers to use their platforms with intentions to harm anyone physically.

This means that you will not be allowed to use utterances that entail violent words like ‘kill’ or ‘die’ in phrases to indicate your hatred over a group of people.

2. Insulting Language

During your stream, you will not be allowed to insult someone repeatedly, whether you meant it as a joke or not.

Obviously, if you are not serious it will be natural that such language will not be banned.

However, if you do it repeatedly, or appear sincere when saying such words on chats or during the stream, it will be considered as an issue.

This also entails that you do not include any insulting language toward an individual or a group of people in your Profile at any time.

There are a lot of things to take into consideration. For example: can you swear on twitch?

3. Stereotypical Language

Any sort of utterances that are used in a stereotypical manner with a negative note will not be regarded as acceptable.

Also, visual effects are of great importance so put some effort into the overall visual outlook or get assistance if you feel the need. For platforms like this, creativity is a must.

Provide your streamers with a set of rules for chatting. This is your opportunity to show the kinder side of your character.

4. Language Regarding Inferiority

Providing any sort of negative information that relates to individuals or a specific group of people concerning their deficiency in some manner will not be tolerated.

This relates specifically to the offenses regarding someone’s lack of hygiene, for example, mental health, physical appearance, or physical inabilities.

Moreover, it is advisable that you do not evaluate anyone’s deeds, beliefs, standpoints, or culture as it is never your place to do that.

Sometimes you are only stating your perspective which will not be taken against you.

Simply try to indicate when you are only observing something, as it may come off as an offense to some of your viewers.

5. Political Segregations and Exclusions

Another tip is that you follow the regulations regarding political topics as these may convey more than what you initially intended.

You cannot deliberately discuss segregations regarding certain groups of people in terms of their voting or political deeds.

Try not to make exclusions of specific groups regarding politics in life or on the platform you are using.

This means that you are not entitled to say who can use Twitch, for example, or why someone should be banned or not.

Do not demonstrate excessively our standpoints on who should be dominant and who should be inferior. Again, focus on spreading tolerance for all people- making your streams welcome to anyone.

6. Do Not Spread Your Ideologies

This is an obvious rule related to the previous two regulations stating that it is best to steer clear from politics.

Naturally, you can discuss any topics you wish, but some require much thought and carefulness before you utter some words.

Any sort of negative ideologies relating to nationality, race, or religion will be observed and registered as offensive and harmful.

For example, do not put the blame on certain countries for past or current occurrences in the world.

7. Do Not Spread Hatred

As you already know from numerous platforms, banned words on Twitch include the regular offensive adjectives or nouns used in a specific context or a phrase.

Spreading hatred online has been a common thing to encounter for ages, but times change and so do regulations.

Bear in mind that not every word you utter will be monitored and registered, but pay attention to how you address people in your stream or your viewers.

In addition, do not make threats on your stream as it will immediately be reported and you will be banned from the platform.

Remember that there might be viewers of younger age, or moderately young people watching your stream.

You can be very influential without even trying to be. So next time think before you say something you will regret afterward.

Update on Banned Words on Twitch

As of December 16, 2020, it is not allowed for streamers to use terms relating to men who are submissive to women – ‘simp’, in addition to ‘incel’ and ‘virgin’.

Although some words do not appear as offenses, they can be used in certain phrases or sentences that would influence negatively some viewers.

Do Not Disclose Other People’s Personal Information

Even though you can encounter streamers talking about other streamers, you have to understand the limitations and features of the information you are transferring.

Do not disclose anyone’s personal address, phone number, or any other information that is personal and not authorized for you to disclose.

Gray Area

In order for you to understand completely what has been stated, try to learn the term ‘gray area’.

This means that most of the language you use is in fact both offensive and appropriate, depending on the use and the context.

Take the above-mentioned example of ‘virgin’- the word itself is not offensive however it can be used in a derogative fashion.

This is why when you feel like you said something that is questionable; accentuate that to your audience.

Regulations concerning words to ban on Twitch are explained using this grey area as there is no specific list naming words that are inappropriate, for the reason explained in this section.

What is AutoMod?

The last thing to remember is that you have an option to regulate what appears on the chat regarding your streaming.

Any sort of language, phrases, or specific words can be filtered using AutoMod.

This means that any language you wish not to appear on your chat will be first sent to you if noticed to contain certain language. Then you either allow it or deny it depending on your evaluation.

You can find all the additional information on the website, but the general aspect is that language can be banned if it relates to discrimination, sexual content, hostile or vulgar language.

Conclusion

To sum up, there are regulations regarding the list of inappropriate words to block Twitch’s explanation on their website.

This is related broadly to the language negatively associated with someone’s race, nationality, religion, gender, and sexual orientation.

If you are not careful you could get suspended or even shut down depending on the level of your use of bannable words on Twitch.

Remember that you can use some words that do not appear offensive in a specific context. However, it is better to be careful as sometimes what is only a joke to you can appear as an offense to someone else.

Twitch is one of the most popular streaming platforms in the world, and with good reason. It’s a great platform for streaming your favorite games live and chatting with other gamers while you’re playing. However, there are a number of banned words on Twitch, and it’s important to be aware of them in order to avoid saying them yourself.

This article goes over the banned words and topics in detail, along with instructions on how to configure AutoMod to help you avoid swearing in chat. If you hear someone using a banned word on Twitch and don’t know what it is, don’t hesitate to let us know!

Banned Words and Topics You Can’t Say on Twitch

When streaming on Twitch, it’s important to be aware of the rules. This includes knowing the banned words and topics that you’re not allowed to talk about. Some of these words and topics include politics, violence, and pornography.

Banned Words and Topics on Twitch

If you break any chat guidelines, you could be in for a nasty surprise – including a ban from Twitch. Following these simple guidelines will help you avoid any drama and stay safe while streaming. Take care when discussing personal experiences or opinions as these could lead to bans too.

Racial, Homophobic and Gender Identity Slurs

There is no place for hate speech or racism on Twitch. Since Twitch is a streaming platform where gamers from all around the world come together to chat, watch videos and games, and compete, it’s important that everyone stays respectful towards one another. This includes not using any slurs – whether related to race or sexuality.

If you do so, you may find yourself in trouble with Twitch admins. If you’ve never streamed before and are worried about what might happen if your streamer uses a slur, there’s no need to be! Simply follow these guidelines: be aware of your surroundings at all times; use common sense; don’t insult other people unnecessarily; and most importantly – have fun while streaming!

Violence and Threats

When it comes to violence and threats, Twitch is very strict in terms of policy. If you ever find yourself in a situation where either of these words are used, it is important to immediately report the matter to Twitch Support.

To make your streaming environment safe for both you and your viewers, follow these guidelines:

– Keep all chat channels open so that viewers can see what’s happening even when you’re not broadcasting. This will help keep everyone informed about your stream status at all times.

– Always be aware of the words that are banned on twitch – they include violence, threats and racism among other things. Make sure that everything you say in chat stays within bounds!

Last but not least – remember: don’t let anger or stress get the better of you while streaming! Keeping an emotional balance during live broadcasts is crucial for keeping everyone entertained and happy without any disruptions or incidents taking place on stream.

Sharing or Discussing Private Information

When it comes to discussing or sharing private information, it is essential to be aware of the Twitch guidelines. This platform strictly prohibits users from talking about certain sensitive topics such as personal information and drug abuse. In addition, chatters are not allowed to mention any of the banned words in chat.

It is important for viewers to familiarize themselves with these rules so that they don’t run into any trouble while watching streams on this site. Doing so will also help keep them informed about all the latest gaming news and events!

Scams and Spamming

When it comes to avoiding scams and spamming on Twitch, you need to be very careful. Both of these activities are big issues and can get you banned for sure. Make sure all your messaging is clear, concise, and honest.

Avoid using any inflammatory or offensive language – this will help avoid scammers from confusing your viewers with their false messages. Furthermore, make sure that the links in your broadcasts are clickable so that people can easily find information they’re looking for. Above all else, stay safe while streaming!

How to Ban Certain Words in Your Chat

Keeping your chat clean and free of vulgar words is essential for a healthy and enjoyable gaming experience. Whether you’re playing single-player or multiplayer games, it’s important to know how to ban certain words in order to maintain a civil environment. Twitch has a forgiving policy so don’t worry if you happen to say one of the banned words! In addition, there are some simple steps that you can take in order to ban certain words from your chat to create a personal Twitch banned words list:

1) Log into Twitch and go to Settings -> Chat -> Filters. Here, you will be able (under ‘Enabled filters’)to specify which terms should be blocked in chat.

2) If any of these terms are used by someone on your stream, they will appear as bolded text next time they get mentioned on stream – making it easier for moderators/streamers alike to deal with the issue swiftly.

3) You can also moderate specific words and phrases using these filtering settings; this way, inappropriate content won’t reach viewers easily anymore.

Gray Area

When streaming on Twitch, it’s important to be aware of the gray area. This includes avoiding any profanity or sexually explicit language. As a streamer, it’s also important to be aware of the Twitch Community Guidelines.

This document contains information on streamer etiquette, streamer rights and streamer responsibilities. It’s also a good idea to stick to general chat when possible, as this is a more friendly environment for viewers. And lastly, make sure to have a backup plan in case of any unexpected situations that might arise.

What happens if you’re caught using one of the banned words on Twitch?

Twitch is a popular platform for gamers of all levels to stream their gameplay and interact with their viewers. While it’s a fun and engaging experience, it’s also home to some words that are strictly forbidden.

Banned Words and Topics on Twitch

If you’re caught using one of these words, you’ll likely end up on the receiving end of a punishment from the moderation team. This could range from a warning to expulsion from the platform altogether. So, it’s important to be aware of the words that are banned on Twitch, and to avoid using them at all costs.
