If you mean «call out» as a verb, it’s two words. I am unaware of
«call out» being used as a noun (if it is, what does it mean?).

MS Word uses the noun «callout» to refer to what we might have called a
text-box — placed near an item in order to add explanatory material. I’ve
never seen it elsewhere, and it’s not in NSOED93.
It needn’t be a box — it may be cloudlike. (Why does this make me think of
funerals?)

«Callout» (noun, one word, no hyphen) is a very common term in
technical publishing and refers to a reference from within the body
text to a figure, a footnote, another section of the text, etc. So
«see Figure 3-2» is a callout.

«Callout» as a noun is used by engineers (wouldn’t you know?}. When looking
at a drawing for a mechanical assembly and seeing a bolt on the drawing, one
could say, «What is the callout for that bolt?» A glance at the parts list
would reveal the specific type of that bolt. That is the bolt’s «callout».

I’m surprised that you’ve not heard it used as a noun. My employers use ‘a
call out’ <style between one and two words varies> to describethe occasion when
an employee on stand by at home is actually called in to work to deal with a
problem out of hours.

The phrasal verb «to call out» is so spelled. The corresponding noun
is callout or (rather oldfashioned) call-out. The past participle of
the verb is «called out» in predicate, but «called-out» when it stands
before what it modifies.
The modern tendency is for nouns made from phrasal verbs to be spelled
solid: printout, workout, standby, leanto, fuckup. But those formed
with in & on still keep the hyphen (sit-in, put-on), and many people
still hyphenate many of the others. It will be a long time before
usage in general settles down. For established terms you can consult
a dictionary — but Webster’s 10th hasn’t caught up with «callout».

«Call-out» is the style I have usually seen for that meaning. It is odd
that it is called a call _out_, but from the employee’s point of view he
is being called _in_, as in your sentence above.

Hello,
call-out and/or callout
<OED Call-out: An instance of being summoned to deal with an emergency or do repairs.: as modifier ‘a call-out charge’>
<Guardian: The AA has said a “pothole epidemic” caused by the “beast from the east” contributed to the highest number of vehicle breakdown callouts in 15 years.>
I suppose ‘callout’ is wrong orthography. Because English prefers hyphenating above writing together. Although one never knows…
-
#2
Both Oxford Dictionaries Online and our own site dictionary show it as hyphenated.
Since in the context in which the Guardian has used it, it’s obvious what it means, I wouldn’t personally class it as wrong. Either way, I wouldn’t worry too much about it.
-
#3
Is this hyphening, writing together, writing separately a ‘lax’ thing? I suppose not…
-
#4
Hyphenation is on the wane in general, much to the detriment of clarity, in many cases. According to Fowler 2015 (Fowler’s Dictionary of Modern English Usage), where a hyphen is not used in a compound word, Brits prefer to write it as two words and Americans as one word. But I’m not at all sure that I agree.

I don’t think it would ever have occurred to me to hyphenate «callout». I might be called out (verb and preposition) to do some work, but the noun describing this, and the adjective for the payment received for doing the work are both «callout» to me.

Interesting. Grammarly spell checker isn’t interested in correcting call-out, callout, call out (this one could be a verbal structure).
-
#8
Hopefully, that’s because when it’s a noun, the hyphen is optional (but the two-word version is wrong).
-
#9
Two-word version: wrong. Hyphen: optional. Thanks, noted. Two-word version: wrong in this case. Also in general? I thought (and was told) that the English were not prone to one-word compounds.

A bit confusing, as ‘call out’ is wrong. (now GRAMMaRLY IS CORRECTING IT FOR CALLOUT)
Two words will be more used with two-noun compounds, I suppose.
Cruise ship..(cruise can be the verb, bad example).Disc jockey.

You were definitely told wrong, then. Just with «-out» alone I can think of a dozen without breaking a sweat:
workout
tryout
cutout
blackout
brownout
shutout
buyout
takeout
printout
shootout
stakeout
rollout

Perhaps he meant noun compounds? I will have difficulty to find the exact passage back (it’s in WR ). I’ll try.
Isn’t it a mixed bag? How many two-noun ‘compound’ words would be written how? How
many two- word ‘compound nouns would be written how? I suppose one sees all kind of orthographies. Its’ a bigger problem for non-natives…I don’t have ‘the feel’.
Look, If hyphenating is really ‘optional’, I could hyphenate by default.

This is just another example of the evolution of compound words. It starts as «call out», becomes hyphenated «call-out» and then merges to «callout». There are hundreds of words that have done this. Glenfarclas has given you 12 examples. The OED shows the variation that can occur — in plumbing, house repairs, car breakdown, etc it is normally still «call-out» (Daily Telegraph 2014), whereas in publishing (a different meaning) it is «callout» ( F. E. Davis et al. Desktop Publishing 1986).
PS
<OED Call-out: An instance of being summoned to deal with an emergency or do repairs.: as modifier ‘a call-out charge’>
Oxford Dictionaries Online (the source of that quotation) is not the OED.
-

Right. Sorry. it’s OED free online. I’ll add always ‘ free online’ in future.
I have ‘something’ called [Oxford ODE ] online also, behind a paywall, via Van Dale (Dutch) dictionary maker. It redirects the ‘callout’ search to call-out and it says:
call-out ▶noun 1 an instance of being summoned to deal with an emergency or do repairs: [as modifier] a call-out charge.2 Printing a letter, word, number, or symbol identifying an illustration or a specific part of one. ■a short piece of text set in larger type than the rest of the page and intended to attract attention.
That seems to include your ‘publishing’ meaning.
I see now that’s the exact same definition OED free online gives too.

The OED (ie the big one) has an entry for call-out which covers both obsolete and current meanings.
For current meanings:
The action or an act of summoning a person or group out; an instance of being summoned out.
Citations mostly call-out, a 1998 citation uses callout.
spec. A request or summons, usually made by telephone, to provide a service, esp. to deal with an emergency or to undertake repairs.
All citations use call-out.
Publishing and Journalism. A short passage of text distinguished from the rest of the page by being set in larger type or otherwise set apart so as to get a reader’s attention. Also: a word or piece of text linked by a line or arrow to (part of) an image or graphic as an explanatory description.
All citations use callout. First citation 1986 — it’s a fairly new usage.
PS
There is no such thing as «OED free online». The OED and OxfordDictionaries.com* are two separate organizations that are part of the Oxford University Press «empire». They have separate editorial teams.

I meant They are free online. How should I refer to them unambiguously? In full as «Oxford Living Dictionaries»?
I began referring to them as «OED free online» in this thread because of your remark:
Oxford Dictionaries Online (the source of that quotation) is not the OED.
I have and use also Oxford OTE online behind a paywall. How should I refer to it unambiguously? As «Oxford OTE » and let readers find out for themselves it’s online and behind a paywall?

Maybe we should both make a point of using its current name of Oxford Living Dictionaries. Meanwhile, I will post on the suggestions list to ask that the FAQ and approved abbreviations list are updated to show the current Oxford online services and abbreviations.

Called out что значит
Verb: The strongest way to issue a challenge towards a person.
1. v. To announce to someone that one knows the other’s lies or intentions.
2. v. To announce another’s intent to ask someone out. Usu. occurs in social situations involving at least three people. Suppose persons A, B, C, and perhaps other friends are in a restaurant. Person A secretly wants in person B’s pants, and is offering a favor or something else in an attempt to get on B’s good side. Person C realizes what is going on, and says to B, «He’s only doing this because he wants to tickle your bojangles.» Person C is said to be calling out A.
Even if person C said that as a joke, it still alerts person B to A’s intentions. If you call out a friend in this matter, you are being an incredible asshole to them, even if you may not realize it.

Что означает фразовый глагол «to call smb out»?
Сразу оговоримся, что это значение употребляется главным образом в американском английском. Впрочем, как мы уже неоднократно писали, британцы прекрасно понимают типично американские выражения, в том числе это.
Фразовый глагол to call smb out означает «раскритиковать кого-л.», особенно публично.
Управление – to call smb out on / over / for smth , например:
We called him out for his bad words –
Вот это и есть глубинный смысл американского выражения to call smb out on / over / for smth , то есть, дословно, «вызвать кого-л. (на улицу, на публику), чтобы раскритиковать насчёт чего-л.», например:
I called my colleagues out on their inability to solve the problem –
We called his words out for their rudeness – Мы раскритиковали (публично) его слова за их грубость
То есть в американском английском вызвать «на пару ласковых» можно и неодушевлённые предметы. Звучит как шутка, но по сути так оно и есть.
Вдогонку подскажем ещё одно хорошее значение этого фразового глагола:
to call out a plumber (an electrician, the troops, the army, etc.) – вызвать сантехника (электрика, войска, армию и т.д.)
Этимология у него такая же – «вызвать из дома». Конкретно это значение употребляется во всех версиях английского языка, включая британский английский.
