Кинопроизводство
Фильм — это результат долгой и слаженной работы большого коллектива профессионалов, производственный цикл фильма делится на основные этапы:
- Проектирование (development) — создается проект фильма, сценарий, согласуются основные финансовые вопросы.
- Предварительная подготовка (pre-production) — формируется съемочная группа, подбираются актеры, планируются съемки.
- Съемки (production) — собственно, снимается фильм.
- Пост-производство (post-production) — монтаж, звук, спецэффекты.
- Распространение (sale) — то, ради чего все и делается. Бывают случаи, когда именно на этом этапе из-за плохого маркетинга «запарывается» отличный проект.
Чаще всего говорят о этапах pre-production, production и postproduction. Хоть для этих терминов и есть русскоязычные эквиваленты «предварительная подготовка», «съемки» и «пост-производство», но довольно часто говорят просто «препродакшн», «продакшн» и «постпродакшн».

Hi there,
I thought Britons used the word «film» exclusively, never «movie.» I guess I just learned it as a rule a long time ago and didn’t give it much though later. Recently, however, I read David Nicholls’s book The Understudy and noticed he used the word «movie» rather than «film.» Or does he use it because it’s supposedly an American film/movie?
As in,
‘You know, your title role, your transatlantic romantic comedy?’
‘Oh, the movie? No, no news.’
‘But you’re still heavy-pencilled?’
…

I believe there is an age difference in the BE terminology.
No doubt influenced by AE, younger people tend to speak of movies rather than films — true in my family

One thing I’ve learnt is never to say never!
It’s partly a generation thing. There are still some people who talk about going to the pictures! Movie is more likely with someone younger. Also more likely if it’s Hollywood (rather than, say, a French film). And there are those who always say film (like me).

It’s a bit hard to tell from the context, but I suppose the fact that the word is in italics could mean he’s saying «oh, you’re talking about the movie«, in exactly the same way he might have said «oh, you’re talking about the film«, or it could be meant to indicate he said «movie» in a particular way, for example, emphasising that it was an American word.
I just had a look at an email I got today from my mother, who is English and in her 60s, and she said she had been «to the movies». On the other hand, she has been in New Zealand for over 30 years, so I’m not sure if she’s a good example.

It’s not just generational. UK business leaders and the UK’s cultural elite use «movie» a lot, just as they use many other American terms. The BE speaker who doesn’t belong to either of these groups tends to use fewer Americanisms. «Movie» is not part of my personal usage: I always say «film».

I think we (in the USA) still use «film» when talking about foreign language films.
I could hear myself saying, «They are playing the old French film,

I don’t think I would say «French movie».

Yes, I would also say that in AmE «film» is used for «art films» and foreign films. So, by the same token, I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that some Britons use «movie» for Hollywood productions. Gwan: Yes, I see your point. I was wondering about the same thing when I read the passage.

But the contemporary cultural elite in the UK? Not knowing much about them (plan to remedy that), I assumed they were more like Stephen Fry, fascinated by American culture while much in love with things British.

One thing I’ve learnt is never to say never!

You’re right, a lot of Americans use «movies» for foreign films as well.
Who knows, maybe the word «film» will hang on just like the word «picture» (for «moving picture,» or for photo) . Language is unpredictable, just like with the two developments from «moving pictures» on the two sides of the Atlantic.

Agreed that in AE a «film» is generally high-brow or more artsy. I agree that many people in the U.S. call anything foreign a film. However, personally to me (and I’m a big film buff) the country of origin isn’t that relevant. I would say a «French movie» for a modern fun comedy but a «film» for any serious work of art. It is not wrong to call a serious film a movie but it seems silly to call a bit of fluff a «film.»
Another fun word in this context is «flick,» which means a movie or film and to my ear adds a bit of irony or self-deprecation. For example, one might commonly say «a porn flick.» There’s also the expression, «chick flick,» which means a movie that women like and men probably don’t. I also might say, «I was at this art flick the other day and I ran into my chemistry professor…»

For me personally I never use the word ‘movie’ except jokingly, and still go to the flicks / pictures and would ‘get a film out’ (hire)/ watch a film’ (TV/DVD). As Packard supposes I have always thought that ‘flicks’ comes from the fact that early films flickered.

When I was a lot younger I used to talk of going to the flicks.
I still routinely go to the pictures. (Well, not routinely, not when it costs three arms and eight legs to get in)
I agree with everyone else that movie is very common among young Britishfolk. I use it myself occasionally, but really only for stylistic variation when I feel I’m saying film too often

Oh, yes, totally skin flick! for the non-natives that is slang for porn movie. Today on word reference there does seem to be more sex and alcohol than usual.

The thread is now talking about two quite distinct things.
1. What do we call the thing we go to see?
Is it a movie or a film … or what?
I sometimes go to see a movie, sometimes a film.
2. What do we say we are going to when we go to see a movie or a film?
Are we going to the movies or the pictures … or what?
In the past, people here went to the pictures, or very occasionally and casually, the flicks.
Now they are going to the cinema, or perhaps to see a movie.

Since the choice between «film» and «movie» depends on a number of factors, could a BE native speaker please tell me which word they use for «a movie star»? Is it «a film star» or does it also depend on what country the actor/actress is from? For example «Nicholas Cage is a movie star» while «Jean-Paul Belmondo is a film star«, is that right?

Stephen Fry cultivates a consciously retro, pompous British manner. It’s part of his act and celebrity persona. He is not necessarily typical of the hipster art world trend-setters and commentators. British culture and its linguistic sub-groupings and dialects is changing more rapidly than many non-BE natives might think.

Кто не любит интересное кино в свободное время? Двойная польза и удовольствие, если смотреть фильмы на английском языке! Давайте разберем лексику по теме и узнаем, где и как начать смотреть кинокартины в оригинале.
Фильмы и жанры
Итак, начало всех начал, это конечно же само слово фильм, film или movie, в британском варианте языка используют film, в американском — movie, но по сути это абсолютные синонимы. Также слово movie может означать и кинофильм и кинокартину. Смотрим фильмы мы обычно по телевизору — TV или в кинотеатре — cinema. У последнего есть еще одно значение — кинематограф.
Самое интересное начинается, когда мы собираемся в кино и надо выбрать фильм, который мы хотим посмотреть. Ох, сколько ссор было при выборе фильма перед кассами кинотеатр, представить даже страшно. А все почему? Да, потому что у каждого есть свой любимый жанр — genre.
Кто-то любит научную фантастику — science fiction, в сокращенном варианте sci-fi, кто-то боевики — action film, для кого-то нет ничего лучше, чем исторический фильм — historical film или фильм ужасов — horror film. Существуют любители мюзиклов — musical. Девушки чаще всего предпочитают комедии — comedy, любовные истории — love story или «два в одном» — romcom — романтическую комедию. А есть еще мелодрамы специально для женщин — chick-flick и для мужчин — bromance («bro» — «братан» + «romance» — о крепкой мужской дружбе). Есть люди, которые очень любят немое кино — silent movie. И если честно, сложно представить человека, который отказался бы посмотреть смешной мультик — cartoon. В зависимости от темы, иной раз интересно посмотреть документальный фильм — documentary.

Создание фильма
Никакой фильм или даже мультик никогда не обойдется без актерского состава — cast, режиссера — director, который следит за всем процессом. Есть еще producer — человек, который спонсирует создание фильма.
Если актер успешен и популярен среди зрителей, часто появляется в фильмах или на экранах (appear), он становится высокооплачиваемым актером — best-paid actor. Или даже суперзвездой, которого везде приглашают — A-lister. Eсли актер еще и талантлив, то он точно достигнет славы — achieve renown.
Большой ценностью также обладает сценарий — script, без которого даже идеи фильма вообще бы не было. Сам процесс, когда режиссер и актеры создают (create) фильм, называется — shoot или make a film.
И если все совпало (актеры, режиссер, сценарий и таланты), записывают музыкальную тему фильма — soundtrack, режиссер говорит «Снято»! — That’s a wrap! И тогда, киноманы идут в box office покупать билеты на премьеру — premiere, где показывают фильм — show.
Если фильм получается успешным — successful, его все смотрят с удовольствием, он получает хорошие кассовые сборы — huge box-office success или даже говорят, что фильм побил рекорды и стал супер успешным — the film smashed the box office, кассовым блокбастером — blockbuster, а в последствии есть все шансы, что такой фильм получит награду — win an award.
Иногда на успех фильма влияет появление звезды в эпизодической яркой роли (камео) — cameo, дебют нового артиста — debut. И тогда решают снять продолжение — sequel или наоборот предысторию — prequel.

Фильмы бывают короткометражными — short-length и полнометражными — full-length, грустными — sad, пугающими или даже устрашающими — frightening. Случаются захватывающие фильмы — exciting, а бывают совсем скучные и неинтересные — boring, когда никак не могут перейти к сути — cut to the chase, или того хуже — глупые и пустые — silly. Но расстраиваться не стоит, так как в следующий раз есть все шансы попасть на фильм интересный — interesting, забавный — funny, приятный — enjoyable, а то и грандиозный — epic.

Movies can be divided into several different genres. There are exciting action movies with gun fights and car chases, and horror movies that make us jump in our seats. There are comedies that make us laugh, and dramas that make us cry. Sci-fi movies show us what the future might be like, historical films tell us stories from the past, and documentaries show us real people and events.
After watching a movie, you might want to ask questions like:
- «Which character did you like the best?»
- «What did you think of the plot?»
- «Did you like the cast?»
- «What was your favourite scene?»

The list below includes some basic vocabulary for talking and reading about your favourite movies, directors and movie stars.
action movie (noun): a movie with many exciting and violent scenes — Our teenage boys love watching action movies.
cast (noun): all the actors and actresses in a movie or TV show — It had a good cast, but the story wasn’t very interesting.
character (noun): one of the people in a story — Harry likes movies with lots of interesting and unusual characters.
cinema (noun): a place where movies are shown on a big screen — Let’s meet in front of the cinema just before the movie starts.
comedy (noun): a film with lots of funny scenes — Let’s see a comedy and have a good laugh.
director (noun): the person in charge of making a movie — The director gets really angry when actors forget their lines.
documentary (noun): a film that’s about real people, events or issues — How can you eat junk food after seeing that documentary Super Size Me?
drama (noun): a movie about realistic characters in dramatic situations — Maria loves legal dramas with lots of courtroom scenes.

genre (noun): a kind or style of music, movie, TV show, painting, etc. — For film class we had to compare movies from two different genres, such as comedy and horror.
horror movie (noun): a movie that frightens and shocks people — If you love horror movies, you’ve got to see Fright Night.
movie star (noun): a very popular movie actor or actress — Movie stars earn millions of dollars every time they play a role.
plot (noun): the series of events that form the main story — It was a good film, but the plot was difficult to follow at times.
scene (noun): a small part of a film — The opening scene showed a young man leaving prison and walking to a bus stop.
sci-fi (or «science fiction») (noun): a genre with stories set in the future or in outer space — Have you seen that sci-fi film Interstellar yet?
