Все прилагательные можно разделить на две большие группы: качественные и относительные. Первые обозначают качество, которое может быть более или менее выраженным: good (хороший), kind (добрый), tasty (вкусный). А вторые описывают признак предмета: материал (concrete — бетонный), принадлежность (library — библиотечный), отношение ко времени (winter — зимний), место его расположения (forest — лесной) и т. д.

Вот именно для качественных прилагательных и можно образовать степени сравнения: хороший — лучше. Сказать «более железный» или «самый апрельский», если это не авторский литературный прием, вы не можете.

Их три: положительная, сравнительная и превосходная.

Positive degree (положительная степень) — та форма, в которой прилагательное представлено в словаре. Положительная степень указывает на то, что предмет или человек обладает каким-либо качеством. Прилагательные beautiful (красивый), small (маленький), ugly (уродливый) употреблены в положительной степени.

Comparative degree (сравнительная степень) используется, как понятно из названия, когда вы хотите сравнить, сказать, что один предмет или человек в чем-то отличается в большую или меньшую меру по сравнению с другим.

Superlative degree (превосходная степень) показывает, что предмет или человек, о котором вы говорите, самый-самый, обладает этим качеством в наибольшей или наименьшей степени.

При образовании сравнительной степени необходимо учитывать длину слова и его последнюю букву.

К односложным и некоторым двусложным прилагательным добавляйте -er. А в предложениях используйте союз than (чем).

1.      В большинстве случаев никаких изменений со словом не происходит.

warm — warmer (теплый — теплее)

cold — colder (холодный — холодный)

hard — harder (трудный — труднее)

narrow — narrower (узкий — уже)

This jacket is warmer than your old coat is. — Эта куртка теплее твоего старого пальто.

2.      Если слово оканчивается на -e, то нужно добавить только -r.

polite — politer (вежливый — вежливее)

simple — simpler (простой — проще)

This task is simpler than the previous one. — Это задание проще предыдущего.

3.      Когда прилагательное оканчивается на согласную с предшествующей гласной, согласную букву необходимо удвоить и добавить -er.

hot — hotter (горячий — горячее)

sad — sadder (грустный — грустнее)

Peter looks even sadder today. — Сегодня Питер выглядит еще грустнее.

4.      Если прилагательное оканчивается на -у с предшествующей согласной, то -у меняется на -i и добавляется -er.

easy — easier (легкий — легче)

lazy — lazier (ленивый — ленивее)

I thought my brother was lazier than I am. — Я думала, что мой брат ленивее меня.

Для образования сравнительной степени от многосложных прилагательных, т. е. всех, в которых от трех слогов и больше, и ряда двусложных необходимо употреблять  дополнительно слово more.

serious — more serious (серьезный — серьезнее)

wonderful — more wonderful (прекрасный — более прекрасный)

perfect — more perfect (великолепный — великолепнее)

How can you be more serious than John is? — Разве можно быть серьезнее, чем Джон?

!Важно! Скорее всего, у вас возник вопрос: как понять, когда двусложное прилагательное требует -er, а когда more. Можете руководствоваться следующими негласными правилами:

• если слово оканчивается на -e, -er, -ow, -le, то чаще всего добавляется -er;
• ряд двусложных прилагательных образуют сравнительную степень обоими способами;
• вы можете смело использовать more, если сомневаетесь — это в любом случае грамматически верный вариант.

Правила образования превосходной степени прилагательных в целом такие же, как описано выше. Меняется только суффикс для односложных -est и дополнительное слово для многосложных the most. Обратите внимание, что помимо дополнительного слова обязательно использование определенного артикля.

This is the strangest day of my life. — Это самый странный день в моей жизни.

This is the most reliable car I have driven. — Это самый надежный автомобиль из тех, на которых я ездил.

Фонетические правила для односложных прилагательных идентичны тем, что описаны в предыдущем пункте:

• в конце -e — добавляем суффикс -st: brave — the bravest (храбрый — самый храбрый);

Но как образовать степени сравнения прилагательных в английском, если вам надо сказать, что-то кто-то или что-то обладает качеством не в большей степени, а в меньшей? Сравнить в отрицательную сторону? На помощь придут слова less (меньше, менее) и the least (наименьший, меньше всего, наименее). Они употребляются с любым прилагательным, независимо от количества слогов в нем.

The sea is less attractive than the mountains to me. — Море менее привлекательно, чем горы для меня.

В этом предложении вы, конечно, можете сказать, что горы привлекательнее (mountains are more attractive), но для автора важно именно меньшая привлекательность моря. Всегда смотрите на контекст, логику и доверяйте своему чувству прекрасного.

This part of the trilogy is the least interesting. — Эта часть трилогии наименее интересная.

Tall and High: As I understood Tall is used for objects that were in a certain way “growth by an action ” A building is, let me use this term, “growth” by people who construct the building, but a mountain is not “growth” by anything, it’s been there forever . So Tall implicates the reuslt of an action and it’s mostly used for physical objects. High is suitable to refer to abstracts ideas. (I know I made some mistakes, so feel free to correct
them)

Technically we use hard to describe something that is not soft. Difficult is something that is not easy.

Many people do use hard in place of difficult and it is acceptable, but technically difficult is more correct. “This is a really difficult math problem.” “The bread was too hard to eat.”

If you are talking about the group (collective) as one unit than the unit is singular, but if you talk about the individuals in the unit, then it is plural.

Past conditional is about past events that can’t be changed.

Cheh, personally i think that reason isn’t a physical object, so it’s like in a case with “high season/price/cost”. Of course, we can count reasons but we can’t measure them, at least if we’re talking about dimensions. Let’s see what Adam will answer us))

Once I was told by a native English teacher that when you talk about buildings or trees you should use the adjective “Tall”. But if you talk about mountains or peaks the adjective is “High”.

When we talk about “high” or “low” locations it usually means how far they are above sea level. Much of the Netherlands is so low-lying, they need dams to keep the sea from flooding in. But Lhasa is over three kilometres above sea level! Hence, one of the highest cities in the world.

“Tallest city” is not a common usage, but could describe the city with the most skyscrapers (probably New York), or the city with the tallest building (Dubai).

The regular meaning of “wicked” is “evil”, like a witch, or like the “bad guy” in superhero and fantasy movies. The slang meaning of “wicked” is the opposite—it means “cool” or “impressive”. A really cool skateboard trick is “wicked”.

In some dialects, it is used as an intensifier like “really” or “extremely”. Something that’s very good is “wicked good”.
