Final Thoughts on Words to Describe Love

Do you have a strong sense of love now? What words will you choose to describe love? We hope you found our collection of words to describe love useful, motivating, and thought stimulating, whether you were seeking for words to explain feelings of love or just the words to describe love itself.

Love might be difficult to put into words at times. ‎It may be perplexing, bizarre, inspiring, raw, exhilarating, or poisonous. Few things are as difficult to express into words as this. If you are asked to define love in one word, 50 people will most likely select 50 different words or methods to express love. ‎

And isn’t that exactly how it should be? Would you characterize love for a romantic partner in the same way you might characterize love for a pet, a kid, or a closest mate?

So, whether you’re looking for love words to explain love for someone in your family, a friend, a boyfriend or girlfriend, the concept of love, or anything else, you’ll find it in the list above.

the best words for love

Love has been described as “A Many Splendored Thing” in poems (William Waterway), in films (1955), and in Academy Award winning songs (lyrics Paul Francis Webster). The same descriptive phrase has been used for a TV soap opera.

“A Many Splendored Thing” originated in a poem by late 19th century poet, Francis Thompson. He was English, so he probably included a “u” in “splendoured” when he coined the phrase in The Hound of Heaven as he spent 182 lines investigating Christianity and God’s search for a missing soul. This would, of course, be 182 lines of words describing the concept of divine love. However, the phrase that has outlived him isn’t really a conclusive description. It’s rather a cop-out.

In the 1970 movie “Love Story” Erich Segal used the phrase “Love means never having to say you’re sorry,” and at about the same time in our history of kitschy-coo, notebooks and stickers flooded the market featuring drawn outlines of a girl and boy, and sugar sweet “Love Is” statements.

The Search for the Best Words for Love

People have been looking for the best words to describe love for years, centuries, and perhaps for millennia. Perhaps they have been searching since the days when cavemen began grabbing cavewomen by the hair before dragging them into the cave as a mark of affection. It would have made sense for them to start considering something other than grunts to describe those feelings they were experiencing. Dragging someone by the hair could be hard work, and grunts could be misunderstood. A cliche or two could save a lot of effort.

Fairy tales, poets, Hollywood movies and Internet sites followed centuries later, finding thousands, if not tens of thousands of ways to continue the quest for the best words to describe love. The very fact they kept coming up with new ones indicates it’s not easy – and the best, and most conclusive, description has not yet been found.

What Is Love?

Anyone who can come up with a definitive answer will have discovered something important. It might have more impact than any other scientific discoveries which have earned experts Nobel Prizes over the years. This could happen because it would influence people’s everyday lives and relationships in a way that could change the world. At least then people might have a real reference point when trying to explain love.

As the situation stands now, there are no words, best or otherwise, that will describe love in a way that will satisfy everyone. There isn’t a phrase that will give everyone a lightbulb moment and a reason to respond, “That’s it! Now I know what love is. Now I can love, be loved and, maybe, be in love.”

Parts of Many Speeches

It’s no wonder it’s so difficult. The word “love” forms parts of many types of speech. It can be a noun (or naming word) for a series of sensations, feelings and emotions. It is also a verb or “doing or action word” when it comes to experiencing it. In addition, love also functions as a noun modifier in “love affair,” an adjective in “loving relationship” and an adverb in “He looked at her lovingly.”

Further complicating the idea of describing love in words is the fact that there are so many different types of love. As if it isn’t already impossible to describe the love experience in words, we are expected to find more words, more adjectives, adverbs and other nouns, to attach to that indescribable concept. This will break it down into categories that are more specific, but probably even harder to describe.

Adding to the Confusion

As a result, the following words, and more, are tossed in: unconditional and conditional, free, passionate, romantic, selfless and self, playful, divine, maternal and paternal, brotherly and sisterly, eternal and endless. It’s supposed to help if we add these to the word we find hardest to apply, and almost impossible to describe. It’s meant to make the unmeasurable more manageable by separating it into smaller categories.

The effect it has, however, is to set up a lot more puzzles and challenges. Now we have not only one concept to describe, and to understand, but several. Perhaps once we have come up with the best words to describe unconditional, or even maternal love, we can return to describing romantic love. Then we can hopefully, get closer to understanding the wonderful, scary, passionate and all-consuming experience that is love. It is, indeed, a “many splendored thing” but it’s also sometimes a many pitfalled thing. It can make you the happiest person around, particularly if you experience it as a verb of doing and experiencing. It can also break your heart if you keep falling in and out of the love noun.

The idea for the Describing Words engine came when I was building the engine for Related Words (it’s like a thesaurus, but gives you a much broader set of related words, rather than just synonyms). While playing around with word vectors and the «HasProperty» API of conceptnet, I had a bit of fun trying to get the adjectives which commonly describe a word. Eventually I realised that there’s a much better way of doing this: parse books!

Project Gutenberg was the initial corpus, but the parser got greedier and greedier and I ended up feeding it somewhere around 100 gigabytes of text files — mostly fiction, including many contemporary works. The parser simply looks through each book and pulls out the various descriptions of nouns.

Hopefully it’s more than just a novelty and some people will actually find it useful for their writing and brainstorming, but one neat little thing to try is to compare two nouns which are similar, but different in some significant way — for example, gender is interesting: «woman» versus «man» and «boy» versus «girl». On an inital quick analysis it seems that authors of fiction are at least 4x more likely to describe women (as opposed to men) with beauty-related terms (regarding their weight, features and general attractiveness). In fact, «beautiful» is possibly the most widely used adjective for women in all of the world’s literature, which is quite in line with the general unidimensional representation of women in many other media forms. If anyone wants to do further research into this, let me know and I can give you a lot more data (for example, there are about 25000 different entries for «woman» — too many to show here).

The blueness of the results represents their relative frequency. You can hover over an item for a second and the frequency score should pop up. The «uniqueness» sorting is default, and thanks to my Complicated Algorithm™, it orders them by the adjectives’ uniqueness to that particular noun relative to other nouns (it’s actually pretty simple). As you’d expect, you can click the «Sort By Usage Frequency» button to adjectives by their usage frequency for that noun.

Special thanks to the contributors of the open-source mongodb which was used in this project.

Are There Any Words to Describe Love

In This Article

Have you ever been in love? Or, are you beginning to fall in love?

If yes, you must be aware that being in love makes you experience unparalleled happiness that you must have never felt before.

If you are asked, how do you know you love someone, or how do you feel being in love, you might fall short of the right words to describe love.

Perhaps, you might end up saying that you feel happy. And, if someone asks you, what makes you happy, you might not have a good reason to tell. Well, this is the power of love!

Love is a powerful emotion that you can feel, but not constrict it in mere words. Nevertheless, in this article, some beautiful words of love are used to give you a  near feeling of what it is to love and be loved.

How to describe love

The common consensus is that love is a beautiful emotion to be in, or it is a marvelous feeling – all these things may hold true for many people.

However, one thing that really stuck with the infamous dialogue on love spoken by the twelfth Doctor is that love is not just something one feels; it is a promise that one makes.

When it comes to words to describe love, it is a promise to love and cherish the other, to respect and devote their life and heart to the other, to grow with each other and to help each other out in whatever way we can.

As each person is raised differently, and they experience life differently; therefore, their needs and wants in life will be different.

As cliché as it sounds, there is a nutter for every nut case. Whatever kind of a person you are or are looking for, give it time and have patience, and they will find you.

It implies that everyone cannot explain love in some standard or well-defined manner. Just like you, every single person is unique, and thus, the ways of describing love for every individual are unique.

What is the strongest word for love?

As said earlier, there is no one word to express love. There are several different words for love.

So, if you ask, what is a better word for love, for some it may be ‘sacrifice.’ For others, it may be compassion or understanding, or respect, or some other word for love.

The best way to know what love is to not go by the hearsay, and fall in love yourself, sink in the feeling and experience it with all your heart.

What it means to love someone can’t be explained entirely by anyone. After all, everyone has their own love language.

To be in love can make you or break you.

So, how do you define love? Or, what words can describe love?

If you were to ask an individual to describe the feeling of being in love or to just use any words to describe love; the answer that you will get might be a beautiful feeling, serene, the world makes more sense, end of all pain and heartache; but seldom does anyone say that it is an enormous responsibility.

To be in love or to admit to being in love is like someone has given you the opportunity to destroy them completely, they have personally hand-delivered the ammunition, and it is up to you that what you do with it. That will either make you or break you!

Different people will have their own words to describe love; based on their background, personality, life, past heartbreaks, or successful relationships.

There are no definite rules or steps to follow.

There are no definite rules or steps to follow

What you take out of it is definitely up to you as there are no set rules or scientific steps to follow when one falls in love.

It is a slow and strenuous process, where you get better by trial and error, where you have to be patient, and kind, responsible, and generous; because love is nothing if not the attributes mentioned before.

In order to describe love in explicit words, a study was conducted. The result was comprised of very interesting and jaw-dropping answers from two different sets of people.

Group A had people who were single, and Group B had people who have been in a relationship for over a year or were married.

This is how they decided to describe love.

Group A aka the single squad

For the single gals and guys, some words to describe love are:

  1. Indescribable
  2. About give and take
  3. Security
  4. About giving respect
  5. Commitment
  6. Being in sync with your significant other

Group B the ones in for the long haul

The till death do part, and the long haul ones sang a different tune. For them, love words are:

  1. Accepting the significant other’s flaws
  2. Healthy communication
  3. Being vulnerable
  4. Equality
  5. Patient
  6. Growing together
  7. Knowing the significant other’s love language and what makes them truly happy
  8. Knowing your significant other’s language, when they are silent or what are they upset about without actually them telling you.

In a nutshell

Being in love is not a child’s play.

Once realized, only let your feelings known if you have the intention of following through. Life is too small; you play with an innocent someone’s emotions and leave them willy-nilly.

You will know how to describe your love, or you will know the words to describe someone you love, which will be different and unique and special; because you are different and unique, and special.

Rest assured, each love story is special.
