Сегодня я хочу рассказать о наследии популярного детского художника и писателя Ричарда Скарри. С его книгами ваш ребенок не будет скучать на уроке!

Книги Ричарда Скарри стали издаваться в России совсем недавно. Уже многим полюбившийся «Город добрых дел» (Busytown) рассказывает о сказочном городе, где живут веселые животные. Семья котенка Хакли, семья Хрюшкиных, фермер Турнепс, их друзья и знакомые работают, строят дома, ходят на почту, лечатся в больнице, пекут хлеб и делают многое другое. Герои переходят из книги в книгу, совершают и героические поступки, и массу смешных глупостей…

За более чем 40-летнюю писательскую карьеру художник создал около 300 книг. Словарь Скарри (Best Word Book Ever) принес ему известность. Есть несколько версий словаря: «Самая лучшая первая книга» (Best First Book Ever), «Самый лучший словарик» (Best Little Word Book Ever) и «Самый большой словарь Ричарда Скарри» (Richard Scarry’s Biggest Word Book Ever).

Я рекомендую использовать словари Скарри на уроках английского. Котята Хакли и Салли, их друзья червячок Лоули и Золотой жук — герои этой книги. «Словарик» состоит из тем «Еда», «Одежда», «Дом», «Машины», «Улица», «Ферма», «Аэропорт», «Порт», «Алфавит», «Части тела».

Как работать с книгой? Возьмем первый разворот — «Одежда». Я рекомендую вместе с ребенком внимательно разглядеть все картинки и четко произнести подписанные под ними слова. Потом обратить внимание ученика на то, в чем он сам одет. Есть ли похожие предметы одежды на нем? Можно нарисовать, вырезать и раскрасить одежду, обращая внимание на цвета (строить словосочетания типа a pink dress). Что носят на улице, а что дома?

С вырезанной одеждой можно поиграть в «What’s missing?» Положите перед ним несколько предметов гардероба, а потом, когда он закроет глаза, уберите один. «What’s missing?» — ребенок должен назвать в ответ убранную вещь.
Для развития диалогической речи можно поиграть в магазин. Сделайте из бумаги монеты и задайте ребенку вопрос ”How much is a dress? ” — ”The dress is ten dollars” — “Here you are!” — “Thank you”.

Каждая тема словарика дает обильный материал для игр и диалогов. Картинки динамичны — на каждом развороте вещи показаны в контексте жизненных ситуаций: мама готовит еду, рабочий подметает улицу, мясник режет колбасу.
Придумывая игры с ребенком, вы развиваете его фантазию и помогаете ему пополнить словарный запас. Книги Ричарда Скарри могут послужить «источником вдохновения» и хорошим подспорьем для преподавателя английского.

Best Word Book Ever by Richard Scarry was published in 1963 and became a best-selling children’s book. Scarry had been illustrating children’s books since 1950, but this was his first as both author and illustrator. The book also marked the beginning of the author’s work on the «Best Ever» series.
The original edition contains over 1,400 labelled pictures and the book sold over seven million copies in 12 years.^[1][2]
The word book is designed to entertain children while teaching them words and numbers. It is divided into subjects on each pair of pages. Subjects range from sports to houses, with examples from all over the world. The pages have a small amount of text, which often challenge the reader to find something on the page. The characters are all anthropomorphic animals, often cats, bears, rabbits and mice, but many other animals are also used. The art for Best Word Book Ever was first drawn in, then painted in, which was by that time Scarry’s normal method.^[1]

The book was first published in the United States in 1963, followed by a British edition published in 1964 by Paul Hamlyn and reprinted in 1965. The Best Word Book Ever has been reprinted and revised many times since. The book has been translated into a number of other languages, including a bilingual edition in English and Spanish^[3] and one in Ukrainian.^[4]

Editing the Best Word Book Ever[edit]

The British edition was slightly altered for the British market. For example, the front cover shows a thatched cottage instead of an American style barn, the «When you grow up» pages feature a British soldier instead of an American one and a sprinkling of British Union Jack flags and text were inserted.^[5]

By 1980 the book had been edited to remove some of what became perceived as stereotypical roles for females and to update terminology.^[6] At least 14 changes were made, including changing a male «policeman» to a female «police officer» on the front cover, and changing «handsome pilot» to «pilot» and «pretty stewardess» into «flight attendant.»^[6]

The book was reduced in pages from 92 to 72 pages, removing such things as «In the Flower Garden.»

Following his great success with Best Word Book Ever, Richard Scarry went on to create a large number of other children’s books in the same style with similar animals, a similar dominance of the art over the text and even similar names, including Best First Book Ever, Best Little Word Book Ever and his last book Richard Scarry’s Biggest Word Book Ever. Various Best Ever books were adapted to video and a television series, «The Busy World of Richard Scarry,» ran on Showtime from 1994 to 1997.

Richard Scarry is one of the world’s best-loved children’s authors EVER! Generations of children all over the world have grown up spending hours poring over his books filled with all the colorful details of their daily lives. No other illustrator has shown such a lively interest in the words and concepts of early childhood. For himself, whenever he was asked how old he was, Scarry would always put up one hand and laugh, saying, «five!»

In his extraordinary career, Richard Scarry illustrated over 150 books, many of which have never been out of print. His books have sold over 100 million copies around the world, and are currently published in over twenty languages. Richard Scarry, Jr., also an illustrator, carries on his father’s work today under the name of Huck Scarry. He was posthumously awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award from The Society of Illustrators in 2012.
