The most covetable, lust-worthy and beautiful bag designs that never go out of style.
Today, It-Bag status is anyone’s game – just consider the new season’s host of coveted beaded totes and embellished pouches -– yet only the world’s best handbag brands are capable of creating styles that become true icons.
So, what does it take for an ordinary handbag to become an iconic one? It’s a question fashion houses have pondered for years, each season creating new designs and hoping that just one will make its mark on fashion history. Perhaps it’s an extraordinary back story, a movie-star endorsement, or simply that magic je ne sais quoi that will seal a design’s place in the handbag hall of fame.
Here, Vogue celebrates the world’s best bag brands and their most timeless creations.

Arguably the most coveted bag of all time, the Birkin’s design was conceived on the back of an Air France paper bag. When actress Jane Birkin sat next to Hermès Chief Executive Jean-Louis Dumas on a flight in 1984 he noticed her struggling to contain her belongings in a large straw bag. Speaking to The Telegraph in 2012, Birkin claimed to have said to her fellow traveller: ‘The day Hermès make one with pockets I will have that.’ So 20,000 feet in the air, the pair designed a solution, and with that the Birkin bag was born. Hermès bags have increased in value over 500% in the last 35 years and are widely believed to be a better investment than gold, diamonds and the stock market. In 2017 a Crocodile Himalayan Birkin broke the world auction record at Christie’s in Hong Kong, eventually going under the hammer for £208,175 to an anonymous buyer.

Upon debuting the 2.55’s chain shoulder strap in 1955, women who had previously been constrained to one hand — the other carrying a clutch bag or stiff tote in the crook of the arm — were given an unprecedented new freedom of movement. With the invention of the 2.55, Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel forever changed the fashion landscape, and the soft design in quilted jersey and calf leather was — and still is — a best-selling classic. When Karl Lagerfeld took over as creative director of Chanel in 1983, he introduced the addition of a turning ‘CC’ clasp to the bag, thus creating the Chanel Timeless. And timeless it is indeed; recent figures from Vestiaire Collective shows it’s the site’s continuously No.1 selling bag for the last decade and it regularly re-sells second hand for more than its retail price.

The Speedy was the first handbag produced by Louis Vuitton and made as a smaller interpretation of the brand’s immensely popular Keepall bag, has remained identical in design since its launch in 1930. Originally made 30cm wide, a 25cm version was created by special request for Audrey Hepburn — a huge fan of the iconic design and famously pictured carrying two at a time — the bag, which now also comes in 35cm and 40cm sizes, has been reworked in numerous colourways and finishes. The Damier Ebene and the Damier Azure checkerboard print versions are now almost as popular as the original versions in the instantly-recognisable Louis Vuitton monogram logo.

We’ve all been there: dragging around a handbag, and a tote bag and an extra laptop bag, because we could not find the right business bag to carry all our daily essentials in style. The best work bags for #girlbosses should have a few key features:
First, your office-appropriate bag should be functional and roomy enough to carry all your work essentials plus more. Laptop? Check. Wallet, phone, and charger? Check. Notebook and pens. Check. Water bottle and makeup bag? Done and done. And maybe even some fun extras like workout clothes and a pair of sneakers.
They should also be chic and compact enough to carry around with confidence, from interviews and Very Important Meetings to your lunch errands and happy hours.
Finally, they should be durable to hold up through your daily commutes, work trips abroad, children drop-offs, and whatever journey life takes you next.
But finding business bags that are both chic and laptop-friendly can be hard work. Good news: we’re about to make your (work) life really easy. Types of work bags for women: What kind of bag should I get for work?
The different types of work bags for women include:
Laptop Bag
As the name suggests, the primary purpose of a laptop bag is to carry a laptop and its accessories such as chargers and cables.
Briefcase
The quintessential classic work bag. A briefcase is a formal, narrow box-shaped bag equipped with a handle. A briefcase is a work bag used by professionals, especially for carrying business documents.
Work Tote
A tote bag is typically a carry-all bag with double top handles. It ranges from canvas to premium versions. Tote bags are usually light, spacious, and most commonly unfastened (though some modern versions now include zippers).
Satchel Bag
Satchels range in size, but a satchel bag is usually a structured bag with a rigid feel structure with a flat bottom and two short handles on top. No matter how much you put inside it, a Satchel bag maintains its beautiful shape, making this structured work bag suitable for women who are in more formal professions.
Backpack
If comfort is key and you’d rather carry everything on your back, backpacks make for great work bags for women.
What to look for in a women’s work bag?
Size matters for women’s work bags
Before you buy a work bag, consider what you’d need it for. Do you bring your whole office with you every day?
If you carry a laptop to work, pick a work bag with a dedicated compartment that is sturdy enough to endure the weight and protect your device. Know the laptop size you want to fit in the bag.
Bonus: The best work bags for women have room for an extra pair of comfy shoes, too.
Pick your work bag in a neutral color and timeless design
A work bag should stand the test of time. Pick your bag in a neutral shade, like black, tan, or brown, to effortlessly complement your workwear.
Invest in a work bag made of durable material
The material of a bag plays an important role in determining the quality of the work bag. Invest in a work bag that will stand the test of time.
Good news for the conscious people out there. Increasingly, animal-free leather alternatives that don’t forfeit style are emerging.
Consider security features
It is surprising how many work bags for women don’t have zippers. We personally prefer work bags that come with a theft-proof top zipper or some sort of top closure. Besides keeping everything safe inside during busy rush hour commutes, it tells people that you care about organization.
Think about your work bag’s function
Ask yourself what you need to carry in your work bag and find a bag that accommodates that list. Some work bags for women have no compartments at all while others have plenty.
If you carry a lot of items, look for a work bag that contains enough inside pockets. If you don’t, a simple exterior or interior pocket to store small essentials may suffice. Again, consider your work style and day-to-day needs to decide on the organizational features you require. For example, if you never find anything in your bag (guilty, here), you should opt for a more structured work bag that organizes all your necessities rather than a tote where all your tagalongs are swimming around in one large compartment.

How To Choose The Best Handbag Brands
Handbags are more than what they appear. Aside from being a functional accessory that holds your cant-live-without-them essentials, they pull together any look, adding a finishing touch that pumps up sophistication, style, and class—and, they’re pretty!
The history of handbags is a short story, only around a century old, but their evolution is what’s so fascinating. Designers offer an enticing range of styles, features, and sizes to suit the ever-changing market.
Of course, women aren’t the only ones toting a handbag. In fact, the category began in the men’s domain, referring to the smaller-sized, hand-held, luggage-like bags they would travel with.
Today, the handbag market is primarily female, with favorites edging towards more functional and adventure-friendly designs, like crossbodies and backpacks. You may say this change exhibits fashion’s progression into athleisure, with consumers desiring more laid-back, everyday looks that take them from running errands to brunch to walking the dog.
But regardless of the direction handbags are going, they are by far, one of the most lusted-after accessories—and a luxury handbag even more so.
But why luxury handbags, you ask? Take a look at one. Handmade with exquisite detailing, premium materials, and a designer’s touch, people love them, not just for their quality, but for the satisfaction they feel carrying one at their side.
10 Best Handbag Brands
This best handbag brands list will feature 10 of our top picks, all highly-coveted designers with strong roots in the luxury handbag game. We’ll pay special attention to the history of each brand and fill you in on a few reasons as to why we think they deserve your attention.
1. Louis Vuitton
None of the names on this best handbag brands list needs an introduction, but Louis Vuitton especially. Easily recognizable, the brand is known for its signatory LV logo that adorns its collection of handbags.
The brand was founded in Paris in 1854 by Louis Vuitton himself. The designer got his start making trunks, which are still a signature mark of the brand today.
Specializing in leather goods, handbags, watches, and accessories, Louis Vuitton is praised for its incredibly high-quality items that are regarded with much esteem in the luxury category. Its recent handbag collection includes instant classics, lots of black and gold, its signature brown leather, saturated colors, and a few interesting prints, like architecture and coins.
Though you can tell the brand has updated its designs, it stays true to its authentic history within its over 400 handbag options.
Shoppers remark at the long-lasting nature of the brand’s items, often choosing Louis Vuitton for its history and clout in the world of fashion, not to mention the generally gorgeous look of its line. You can find LV bags anywhere from $1,680-$6,550.
2. Chanel
Say the name Chanel and visions of pearls, black, and heated romance come to mind, and you can almost smell the rich, sensual scent of its house perfume. Beginning as a hat shop located on Rue Cambon, Paris in 1910, the brand was the vision of Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel who soon began adding clothing to her collection, launching in boutiques in Deauville and Biarritz.
Chanel is responsible for fashion revelations such as the woman’s suit, costume jewelry (namely pearls), and the little black dress. Are you getting visions of Audrey Hepburn yet?
Equally as recognized for her celebrated perfume and quilted handbag, the latter is one of the reasons Chanel is a high priority on our best handbag brands list. Often choosing soft, buttery lambskin or caviar leather, Coco Chanel was known to be a rebel, advancing the frontiers of women’s fashion.
Its handbag collection is sophisticated and sweet, filled with modern takes on timeless classics, using unique fabrics like shearling, edgy lettering, and shimmering sequins.
The collection plays around with shapes and textures, featuring a majority of compact bags that may not offer a ton of space, but pack a punch in style. Each bag represents something characteristic of the brand, whether that’s pearls, cutesy pink, or tweed.
Today, you’ll find smart clothing, handbags, watches, and jewelry among its timeless line, of which many women strive to own at least one piece of at some point in their lives. Chanel bags tend to range from $4,000-$11,000.
3. Gucci
Founded in Florence, Tuscany in 1921, Gucci got its start as a luxury luggage maker designing high-quality goods for wealthy travelers and equestrians. Created by Guccio Gucci, the brand gained further popularity under the direction of his son, Aldo.
Today, Gucci is part of the Kering Group, a company that manages high-end leather goods, fashion houses, and jewelry. Over time, Gucci has been described as influential in the luxury accessories category with its fresh collections often featuring pop culture designs and collabs with relevant celebrities like Kylie Jenner.
Gucci’s creative director Alessandro Michele is responsible for uniquely positioning the brand among other world-class designers, offering Gen Z-friendly collections that exude the same high standards the brand is known for.
The brand is certainly having a moment with teens, and its collection features smooth lines, supple leather, and modern detailing like chains, wood, and enchanting pops of color.
One of the names on this best handbag brands list that doesn’t rely on black, Gucci’s bag collection is anything but traditional. Though its shapes are smooth and almost retro in feel, contrasting color blocks and mixed materials make its bags stand out. Most bags sell for $950–$4,000.
4. Dior
There’s a subtle, sexy edge found within Dior’s collection of classic cuts, one that’s exuded from chic cheetah print handbags, mini printed tennis dresses, and punk-worthy ankle boots. And, it’s no stranger to the royal family, designing for some of the most elegant and wealthy faces of the world, like Grace Kelly and Princess Diana.
Founded by Christian Dior in 1905, the Paris-based brand has been considered one of the most influential designers since the 50s when it introduced the voluminous look to traditionally flat dresses to create the new feminine silhouette.
Though in the mid 20th century Dior’s new age volume came as a shocker, it’s what ultimately led to the designer’s popularity. You can still see his influence in fashion today embodied in tight waists, flouncy skirts, and bold prints.
Dior’s passionate and eccentric personality shone through his designs. Today, the brand is run by creative director John G who stays true to the brand’s roots, creating a delicate balance of the classic and edgy, the bold and subtle.
You’ll see that balance reflected in Dior’s handbag line that features out-of-the-ordinary prints and features affixed to traditional shapes.
The collection offers trendy takes on styles like the saddlebag, and you’ll find the same patterns that run through the brand’s apparel line, along with a potent dose of red, black, and quilted leather.
Consumers love Dior for its style—impeccable, unhinged luxury. You can find handbags for around $1,500-$6,200.
5. Fendi
Two elements always come up when talking about Fendi—handcrafted detailing and fur. Known for its creativity with fur (take a peek at the spiraling brilliance of the white mink gilet), the brand’s handbag collection features exotic animal prints, asymmetrical shapes, and bold lettering.
Created by Edoardo and Adele Fendi in 1925, the brand is now owned by LVMH. But, you’ll still find Fendi’s quintessential influence, as Silvia Venturini Fendi recently came on as its new creative director.
Silvia was actually the one to launch the Fendi Baguette Bag, which is known in the fashion world as a wardrobe must-have. You can still find the baguette bag in its modern collection, transformed with oversized stitching, convertible straps, and embroidery.
Take a peek at any Fendi runway, and you’ll see romantic, ready-to-wear pieces that border on the experimental but retain the heart of tradition. As for its bags, they’re certainly more modern than other names on this best handbag brands list, full of creativity and daring lines.
The public celebrates Fendi for retaining family tradition, applauding Silvia’s dedication to Italian history while spinning her designs with a contemporary touch. The brand’s bags retail for between $1,350–$6,400.
6. Michael Kors
Michael Kors helps us round off this best handbag brands list, offering approachable, attainable bags that are loved by the younger generations. Or, anyone who’s after a designer quality item but wants to keep the price casual.
One of the more recent designers on this best handbags brands list, Michael Kors’ namesake brand was established in 1981, offering men’s and women’s fashion, accessories, and shoes. Though not as prestigious as some other names, the brand is still known around the world and is adored for its classic, modern, and effortlessly wearable collections.
In its handbag line, expect cutesy colors, fun shapes, and trendy staples like backpacks. While other brands on this Best Handbag Brands list offer collabs with Disney or feature cartoon characters, Michael Kors’ selection pumps up the fun with studs, chains, and lots of pinks.
With quite a number of options (the website shows 140), shopping at Michael Kors is exciting. In general, buyers are happy with the expansive selection they don’t need to close their eyes to shop from. You can find its bags anywhere from $200–$2,350.
7. Marc Jacobs
Another one of the newer names on this best handbags brands list, Marc Jacobs, was launched in 1984 by the man himself. Today, it’s owned by LVMH.
The American brand is known for its 90s grunge style and references to pop culture, like Charlie Brown. In its most recent handbag collection sits self-proclaiming bags (they literally say what they are, ie. The Tote Bag)—a modern reinvention of the brand’s most iconic styles.
Marc Jacobs handbags are a mix of materials and prints. The designer uses a lot of cotton, psychedelic prints, and canvas straps, featuring more casual styles, like satchels and backpacks.
Known for its quality, casual line, Marc Jacobs is loved for the value it offers shoppers, incorporating top-of-the-line fabrics, eye-catching hardware, and luxury designs. But, it sells them for much less than the majority of brands on this best handbag brands list.
Media says that though the designer sort of fell out of fashion after joining the Louis Vuitton team, Marc Jacobs is back with the release of his contemporary line, The Marc Jacobs, which showcases pop graphics and identifiable characters.
His new line is in an effort to reintroduce himself to the world, and while it features cartoon characters, it isn’t aimed at Gen Z. Millennials seem to be the ones who mostly tout the line, with most bags going for around $135-$550.
8. Prada
Prada’s style is all about exploring, pushing, and feeling. With unusual prints, textures, and shapes, its collection is a reflection of the world around us, often taking inspiration from the ugliness of the world.
Sounds like a strange concept, and though it’s brought the brand some criticism, it’s also what sets it apart from other best handbag brands on this list. Founded in Milan in 1913 by Mario Prada, the brand has been passed through the generations and is run today by Miuccia Prada, whose designs also grace the runways of Miu Miu.
While Prada is dark and exploratory, Miu Miu is vibrant, fun, and popping—the two balance each other out.
Since Miuccia Prada took over the brand in the 80s, it has shifted from one known for its leather goods to something more unique, modern, and critically acclaimed. When she came on board, Miuccia’s first accomplishment was a nylon backpack affixed with the brand’s signature silver triangle.
While you can’t find that exact backpack in Prada’s current handbag collection, the brand still uses a ton of nylon, along with faux fur, and a few leather pieces.
Prada handbags have a more casual vibe about them, but since there are over 300 options, as you can imagine, they include pretty much every style of bag, though the color palette is mostly muted with a few bright yellows and pinks thrown in for fun. You can find handbags for $1,680–$8,000.
9. Coach
Coach believes in “crafting beautiful things that you can be yourself in.” Its website is filled with smiling models who genuinely look to be enjoying themselves—quite the change from the somber and moody ones that usually showcase high fashion.
Founded in New York in 1941 by Lillian Cahn and her husband, Miles, Coach captures the essence of the fast-paced city mixed with the timeless classics of the past. What started as a handcrafted leather company transformed into a global brand offering men’s and women’s apparel, accessories, shoes, and handbags.
The reason Coach is one of the best handbag brands on the market truly needs no explanation, but we’ll do our best in case you’re a stranger to its ever-popular collections.
Even though Coach prices its bags mid-range, the quality of stitching and detailing that goes into each one is something to behold. With the hopes of giving you a piece that will stay in your closet for a lifetime, how the brand’s bags are made is something it puts heavy emphasis on.
In its line of handbags, you’ll find authentic shapes mixed with funky prints, like ducks, elephants, and the occasional Mickey Mouse. Clearly aimed at the younger generations, Coach bags mix luxury quality with a playful edge—something that makes them some of our faves on this best handbag brands list.
With a sustainable heart, the brand offers bags made from recycled materials but still makes the majority in leather and canvas.
Regarded as a functional brand appreciated for its value, Coach is expressive and loved for its range of styles, detailing, and quality. A handbag from this brand goes for $195-$9,300, but most styles are within the lower section of that range.
10. Hermes
The brand with the longest history on this best handbags brand list, Hermes, was founded in 1837 by Thierry Hermes in Paris. Launching as a harness workshop, the brand specialized in wrought iron harnesses for carriages, then began making saddles, adding clothing and accessories to its collections in the 1920s.
And thankfully they did because the world wouldn’t have the revolutionary Birkin bag which nestles perfectly into its selection of smooth leather bags offered in magnetic colors and intriguing lines.
Hermes offers a few different styles of handbags (clutch, shoulder, tote, etc). But, in an effort to stay true to its roots, it makes a ton of different straps for those bags, stamped with fun textural prints and dyed unusual colors.
Although all of the names on the best handbags brands list are luxury, Hermes is quite elevated. Its skilled artisans construct the bags by hand, ensuring no stone is left unturned when it comes to quality and detail.
Unlike other designers, Hermes won’t give away any of its line for free in order to bring it more attention. That’s something that sets the brand apart from others, and a cool detail that tells us just how exclusive it really is.
You can get your Hermes handbag anywhere from $5,200 for a clutch to $40,000 for an alligator Birkin.
What Are The Different Types Of Handbags?
The world of handbags is expansive, immersive, and enthralling. From compact designs made to fit just the essentials to ones you technically could take grocery shopping, handbags are more so loved for their look than they are their potential space.
Whether you’re an A-list celeb or a working mom of three, there’s a good chance you have more than one bag in your closet. Serving different needs or looks, like shopping trips, evenings out, or running errands, handbags work to accentuate your style, outfit, and personality.
Not every designer makes every type of handbag, but their collections are surprisingly vast, including classic favorites that originated at inception, as well as many updated, modern styles that reflect the ever-changing current of fashion.
When searching through the Best Handbag Brands, you’ll come across a range of enticing styles.
Looking for convenience? Satchels, crossbodies, and backpacks usually do the trick. Featuring spacious compartments, travel-friendly straps, or durable fabrics, these bags pull their own weight while looking incredibly chic.
If it’s the classics you’re after, look no further than a shoulder or hobo bag. Shoulder bags are the go-to bag for many women, offered in all kinds of sizes, and designed to be worn on the shoulder, hanging daintily by your side. Hobos have a more slouchy, bohemian feel to them, bringing a relaxed vibe to a polished look.
Want a little more room for your necessities? Try a tote bag or duffel. Making it a dressy occasion? Try a clutch, minaudiere, or baguette bag. They hold the basics but have a more sophisticated feel. Some have straps, while others are designed to be held in hand.
If you love unique styles, search for a saddlebag. Many of the varieties found within the collections of brands on this best handbag brands list love playing around with shape, fabric, and features. This is one that receives the most makeovers, with designers reinventing its shape and experimenting with the look of this classic Western favorite.
Difference Between A Purse vs. A Handbag
You may think the words are interchangeable, but really a purse and a handbag are two entirely different things. Let’s start with a bit of history.
The word purse dates back to the Middle Ages, describing something to hold currency. It was a simple fabric pouch that sheltered coins, usually affixed with a drawstring or some sort of fastened tie—we’re totally picturing Robin Hood’s pouch here, btw, but surprise, surprise, that’s what they looked like back then.
At its base, a “purse” holds money, and while its design has certainly come a long way—now something that’s primarily owned and toted around by women on their shoulders—it’s still considered to be a money holder by those in the East.
For some, the differences between a purse and handbag are non-existent, believing the words are synonymous with one another. This may have to do with where in the world those people are located, as Europeans tend to use the word “handbag,” while Americans still say “purse.”
You’ll even find a few Western folks who call their handbag a pocketbook—a derivative of the word “purse” that denotes its money holding capability, harkening back to the days of writing cheques.
The word “purse” was the primary word people used for the vessel that carried their funds, right up until the start of the 20th century when luxury designers started getting creative. Making a mini version of what was essentially a suitcase, they began calling them “handbags,” as they were meant to carry much more than just money.
Constructing these handbags with functional features like organizational compartments, zippered pockets, while playing around with size, handbags became something women could conveniently store their daily necessities.
And though handbags are a primarily feminine accessory, some of the names on this best handbag brands list offer sections strictly for men, and in fact, the whole handbag concept came from men’s fashion, or rather, men’s travel.
Whether you call your handbag a purse or vice versa, it’s not a big deal. In terms of fashion history, the evolution of the handbag is what makes all the difference.
Things To Consider When Buying The Best Handbags
Now that you know what makes a handbag a handbag, there are a few things to look out for when making your selection. These days, you can shop anywhere for one, but the best handbag brands speak for themselves.
In our list of the 10 top best handbag brands, you’ve gotten to know some of the top designers on the market, but of course, their styles are all quite different. Certain brands offer specific styles only, so choosing which brand to shop may come down to whether or not they offer the style of bag you’re after.
If you have a preference of brand, that will come into play too, as if you’re a lover of history, more modern brands will be out. We’ve included a fun mix of designers in this list, so we hope you’ll find one that resonates with your personal style, budget, and needs.
All of the names on this best handbag brands list embody quality, so what you may want to keep an eye out for instead, is the material and hardware of each bag—you may prefer lambskin leather over calfskin, or canvas over PLU.
Once you’ve settled on a look, consider the weight and capacity of the bag. Why choose a minaudiere when you want to go hands-free? Or a heavy shoulder bag when you need the convenience of a light tote?
Picture your perfect bag. What does it look like? What can it hold? Is it for special occasions or for daily use?
While you browse this best handbag brands list and venture onto each site, keep an eye out for details. Read the information of each one. We’re dealing with luxury here, and the bag you choose will be yours for many years to come, and often, is an investment piece.

It was founded by Jean Cassegrain, and is one of the few French luxury companies that is still family-owned. While the French brand first gained renown for its classic jeans in raw denim, the brand now offers a complete collection of women’s clothing and accessories that embodies simple, casual elegance. Jean Touitou always uses both classic and noble materials to offer quality pieces with timeless cuts. My favorite bags from A.P.C. are the Albane cross-body bag and the Demi-Lune bag. You can shop their bags here at MachesFashion or Farfetch.

Raised by a Danish mother and a French father, the stylist Vanessa Bruno made the most of her various and precious origins to launch her eponymous brand of ready-to-wear and accessories in 1998. Welcome to the iconic luxury handbags list that doubles as a curated guide to iconic “IT” bags that are organised in alphabetical order complete with small descriptions on each. Discover all the coveted classic luxury handbags across the decades that are beloved by celebrities, clientele and fashion fans alike. This list will be updated over time and also includes an honourable mentions section for those bags that haven’t yet achieved the level of status it needs to make our IT bag list.
“Luxury bags make your life more pleasant, make you dream, give you confidence and shows your neighbours you are doing well”
– Karl Lagerfeld
I was inspired by the recent V&A exhibition that I have yet to see in person due to Covid-19 measures, however if you know me, you know handbags are my first love and I got my hands on the exhibition book and a Vogue essentials book both of which are dedicated to handbags (linked below – not affiliated). The handbags listed have managed to stand the test of time and remain statement pieces in people’s wardrobes.

“IT” Bags and Handbags with Legendary Status
Alma | Louis Vuitton
It was Gabriel (Coco) Chanel who requested to have the Alma bag designed through special order in the Damier pattern (french for checkerboard) in the famous Louis Vuitton canvas material. It is important to note that the Damier pattern came before the LV monogram we know Louis Vuitton for today. Louis Vuitton similar to other fashion houses had been victim to dupe and copy culture, even back in the late 1800s, hence the need for the Damier design on the canvas and later on, when they managed to find a way to copy the checkerboard design, Louis Vuitton created the monogram. The Alma bag was a hit for Gabrielle and soon after Louis Vuitton made it available to the public for purchase.
There came a resurgence in demand for the now classic Alma bag when Marc Jacobs revamped the bag in a metallic finish which was later made famous by Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian-West who were photographed together with the bags in silver and gold metallic styles. This photo of Kim and Paris is typically used by fashion commentators and historians but also as a pop culture reference for the 2000’s in general.
Baguette | Fendi
As some of you may know Karl Lagerfeld was the creative director for Chanel and Fendi, with the FF Fendi logo we know and love today being attributed to him. Karl’s genius with IT bag creation wasn’t solely reserved for the french brand, Chanel. The Luxury Italian fashion house, Fendi also has its own beloved IT bag called the Baguette.
Similar to that circulated picture of Kim and Paris with the Alma bag, this Fendi Baguette whilst was instantly a hit amongst followers of fashion, was in fact popularised by the hit TV show Sex and the City. This bag has become more widely known since and many are fond of its cameo with the main protagonist Carey Bradshaw played by Sarah Jessica Parker in the mugging scene, which had parallels with Clueless’ Azzedine Alaia dress scene which starred Alicia Silverstone.
Bamboo | Gucci
The Gucci team found a way to use a material that wasn’t rationed during the second world war and that could be incorporated in multiple designs which was Bamboo. They found a way to manipulate the bamboo to create the handle shape we know and love today. Once the process was finalised they quickly patented the technique and put it into production so it became available in 1947. The use of unusual materials i.e. the exposed bamboo was an instant hit and put this bag on the map for fashion lovers around the world. They maintained these techniques and designs even after the material restrictions post-war were lifted.
Birkin | Hermès
I have written a few pieces on the Birkin however these bags are not only beautiful in design but are well-known for having great re-sell value for those who are lucky enough to acquire one. Once purchased, due to its exclusivity and the materials used, the bag appreciates in value. They are probably the only bags that appreciate in this way that aren’t under the limited-edition category. The more popular the size (smaller sizes these days) and colour (neutral or primary colours these days), the greater the added value in the re-sell market.
The bag has been referenced not only in pop culture mediums like Sex and the City (again I know) but also finance and business oriented journalism publications.

Cartier London Vanity Case | Cartier
There was a need for vanity cases to be introduced in the 1920s because fashion changed and became more liberal than ever, meaning less layers and therefore places to put things in, that would typically be found in the clothing at the time. Women began to carry vanity cases and Cartier and other jewellers made personalised versions for their top clients, which you can find at auctions etc. today. These make a great novelty investment piece for fashion lovers today.
The compositions of the top vanity cases would include for example diamonds, 18k gold and enamel and were very ornate in style.
City Bag, formerly ‘The Motorcycle Bag’ | Balenciaga
The bag that takes the cake for the edgy consumer is the casual-chic, neo-classic Balenciaga City bag or Motorcycle bag which like many featured on this list had the “IT” factor from the moment it was available to the masses. The bag was originally introduced in around 2000 -2001 by Nicholas Ghesquière.
The story goes that the higher ups at Balenciaga were not a fan of the prototype Nicholas made and so they agreed to make it a kind of prop for the models to take down the runway. It turned out the majority of the models enquired about the bag, and it was Kate Moss who asked if it was vintage as she wanted it for herself like so many others. Nicholas explained it was just a prototype but cleverly had the foresight to persuade manufacturers to make a few of these bags for influencers, fashion insiders and some of the models who attended the show, including Kate. Word spread and the prototype was tweaked and produced for public consumption soon after. They later adapted it further in 2002 by including an attached leather mirror which just added to the utilitarian and modern vibe that it was so loved for.
Classic Flap Bag and 2.55 | Chanel
For those who have been living under a rock, the Chanel flap bag in the CC and 2.55 clasp versions are IT bags that have truly stood the test of time. Their desirability despite the controversy around price hikes during Covid-19 remains stronger than ever. Karl Lagerfeld managed to breathe new life into the original Gabrielle Chanel version of the bag (2.55) of which one of his adjustments was replacing the claps with a CC logo design, making it more multi-purpose.
I have written extensively on the history and design details of these bags which can be found here on page 16. There are 5 Chanel classic bags in total and if you would like to explore and learn more about the other classics feel free here.
1961 Jackie Bag | Gucci
What I love about this bag is that it is perfect for those who have an affinity for 90s-2000s bags that are compact but has the rich history synonymous with the bag greats like the Hermès Kelly. These bags work for those who like a more bohemian style and those who want structure as it straddles the two styles perfectly. The Jackie bag was originally released in 1958 and was at the time called the Constance but it wasn’t until 1964 when Former First Lady Jackie Kennedy Onassis was photographed soon after having purchased a few variations of the bag that Gucci made some changes.
Jackie Kennedy Onassis would use the bag to shield herself from the paparazzi and it was after the photos had surfaces that Gucci amptly renamed the slightly altered version of the Constance the Jackie 1961 or Jackie 1961 Hobo bag.
As mentioned before the style is similar to 90s- 2000s style bags and so it has seen a resurgence in interest and sales today. The Jackie bag is now available in different size variations now thanks to the current creative directors.
Kelly Bag | Hermès
“The Original Kelly bag …is perhaps one of the most iconic bags of the 20th century’’
– VOGUE Essential Handbags by Carolyn Asome
The Kelly bag was originally designed and made by Emile Hermès’ successor (his brother-in-law) in the 30s, Robert Dumas. This bag is deemed the most prestigious at the Hermès fashion house and according to many, of any fashion house to date. It was 1956 when former Princess of Monaco, Grace Kelly was photographed with the bag a great many times, so much so that the Hermès team negotiated with the Monaco royal family to rename the bag after their Princess Grace. Legend has it that Princess Grace Kelly used the bag to cover her baby bump during the early stages of her pregnancy. Similar to Gucci’s Jackie bag the Kelly bag was born and its top handle design was a fresh trend that has gone on to become a beloved handbag staple.
Lady Dior | Dior
Named after the People’s Princess, the late Princess Diana, The Lady Dior bag still holds the title for the most classic and popular piece at Dior to date, with various creative directors creating variants with different finishes, sizes and hardware combinations. The bag that I have seen that has a similar appeal to that of the Birkin is Dior’s, Lady Dior Himalayan Lizard bag, of which has of course great re-sell potential for the owners due to its composition.
Sac de Jour | Yves Saint Laurent
The brand that brought us the first ever women’s Le smoking suit in the 60s and who’s founder worked under Christian Dior himself unsurprisingly has an iconic bag or two of its own. 2013/14 under Hedi Slimane’s reign the Sac de Jour was born and became a neo-classic IT bag in an incredibly short time. It is loved for having Birkin-like aesthetics and practicality, yet more understated and accessible.
Saddle Bag | Dior
Another beloved Dior bag that was featured in the TV show Sex and the City is the Dior Saddle bag, which is said to be the Classic boho alternative to the more structured and sophisticated style of the Lady Dior. There has been a recent resurgence in this bag’s appeal since Maria Grazia (the current creative director at Dior) reintroduced this classic adding a modern twist using different patterns and finishes. My favourite is the pony hair version that stylist Law Roach showcased on his instagram stories from his personal closet.
Safety-pin Bag | Versace (Gianni Era)
Whilst I was aware of the safety-pin dresses in the Gianni era, I was not at all familiar with this Safety-pin IT bag. I had recently read the V&A exhibition book ‘Bags: Inside Out’ and stumbled upon this beauty of a bag with silver hardware.
Whilst it is known that I am more of a fan of gold hardware, this is a good silver hardware alternative. I am in love with this bag for its design, history and what it represents as a Gianni piece.
Speedy | Louis Vuitton
Similar to the Louis Vuitton Alma bag story, the Louis Vuitton Speedy was made famous by Audrey Hepburn, who loved the travel version called the Keepall, so much that she specifically expressed to have a more compact handbag version. The Speedy was born and it was not too long before it became available to the masses with even more variations and finishes.
Stardust Evening Bag with Cigarettes and Vanity Cases | Wilardy Originals
Similar to the Versace Safety-pin bag, I honestly didn’t know anything about this evening bag and its significance until I read the V&A Exhibition book ‘Bags: Inside Out’. These bags were loved and worn by Hollywood starlets like Elizabeth Taylor and Marilyn Monroe. Owning one of these bags came at a hefty price because of the intense methods used to create them. These bags were made of Lucite (plastic) however were hand moulded using extremely high temperatures in order to shape and construct the bags.
“A bag if you think about it – and I do , a lot – has a life of its own. It just is, whereas clothing is nothing without a body inside“
– Tom Ford
Honourable Mentions
Stark Bagpack | MCM
The Stark Bagpack is the star product that put the brand on the map. On Beyonce, Cindy Crawford and Diana Ross’ radar, this bagpack deserves to be on this list for its impact in the asian market, Germany (where the brand was founded) and amongst luxury collectors worldwide. It comes in a variety of finishes including studded which has proved relatively popular.
Whilst I have a European market’s eye for the luxury elite, I am making a conscious effort to do some research and include those that I aren’t as familiar in my region. The founder Michael Cromer built the brand in Munich in 1976 and it grew from strength to strength particularly in the 80s where it had the reputation for being “flashy”. Later down the line however the MCM founder was met with some legal troubles which resulted in a change in ownership of the strong brand to the retail business Sungjoo Group in 2005. Whilst the brand’s impact in European/western markets has experienced some strain, in Asia it has grown considerably.
Serpenti Forever Crossbody and Shoulder Bags | Bulgari
For a bit of context, Bulgari was founded in Italy in 1884 by Sotirio Bulgari (of Greek heritage). The new venture started out as a silverwares and home decor store but quickly evolved into a more jewerly focused business in 1905. Bulgari had loosely used the serpent theme for his watch designs but it wasn’t until 1932 when Sotirio died and his sons had taken over that there was a real shift towards a more serious usage of the serpent as a brand and as part of future collections. In 1940, Bulgari made serpent-style jewellery using the technique called Tubogas which was perfect for wrapping around the arm (like a snake).
In the 60s the Serpenti collection truly took off and garnered momentum from none other than Elizabeth Taylor herself who was a known fan of the Bulgari brand prior to this specific collection. In 1962, Elizabeth wore the Bulgari snake bracelets in a publicity shoot while shooting Cleopatra in Rome. You have to understand that at the time Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton’s affair (two Hollywood titans) meant all eyes were on them whilst the movie was being produced and some time after. It was here the Serpenti collection was immortalised and forever in the fashion worlds hearts.
It was only until 2012 that Bulgari had extended the Serpenti collection by including bags with a clasp shaped like the snakes head. Having seen handbags and perfumes making up the bulk of revenue for major fashion brands I feel like it was a smart decision to expand their provisions ever so slightly in this way.
The Bulgari Serpenti Forever bag has become a good alternative to collect amongst the major bags as it is classic and iconic enough that people know the brand and bag at first glance however, Bulgari’s association with Jewellery makes it a choice made further down the line for bag collectors. This is however one of my favourite understated bags and something I will be on the hunt for later down the road.
Shopping Bag | Telfar
Inclusivity in a luxury brand is a difficult one to straddle as you want to create the allure of grander and uniqueness. The Telfar wave attracts a new fashion client who wants something of quality that is sustainable but without the uppityness of some of the traditional brands. Nicknamed “The Bushwick Birkin” the Telfar Shopping Bag uses an approachable design that is utilitarian in style. This bag has for sure made history but it is hard to tell for now if it will indeed make the IT Bag status, although it looks promising, given how quickly each drop sells out.
Sunset | Yves Saint Laurent
Sources say this bag was introduced in 2016 and like most launches from Yves Saint Laurent has become a fashion staple in many wardrobes. This is the perfect crossbody bag with little bulk yet quite roomy given the various compartments in its arsenal. In a decade or so I feel like it will become a true “IT” bag and I know for me I have a desire for it to be in my collection one day. It is simply stunning which is certainly on brand with Yves Saint Laurent.

Best zippered tote bag
Finding the right tote bag is like finding the perfect pair of jeans. It seems simple, but when it comes to bags, simplicity can be deceiving. The tote could be just too small to fit your laptop, have straps that aren’t long enough, or slump over when you want structure. The best tote bag is the one that fits everything you need and that you can carry for hours, whatever you might be doing.
These are the best tote bags for exactly what you need them for — whether you’re traversing Europe, taking a weekend trip, or commuting to your office. Our style team has tested nearly every bag on this list, and after hours of additional research, we’re confident you’ll find exactly the bag you need.
Best tote bag overall: Cuyana System Tote
Insider
There might not be a tote bag for absolutely everything, but this one comes pretty close. Its silhouette is just a little bit different from your average tote bag, but that’s what gives it a stylish flair. The best part of this tote bag is how immensely customizable it is. If you need it for work, you can add a laptop sleeve. If you want more compartments, you can insert pouches. And if you want to convert it to a crossbody, you can add a colorful or matching strap.
The System Tote is well-made and designed to be whatever you need it to be, which is why it gets our pick for the best overall tote.
Best budget tote bag: Dreubea Faux Leather Tote
Amazon
With over 60,000 reviews on Amazon and four stars, this tote is a steal at only $9.99. From the outside, it looks a lot like some of the bags on this list that are many times the price, but the inside is no-frills. You won’t get fancy water bottle compartments or sublime construction with this tote, but you will get the opportunity to choose from dozens and dozens of colors. And if you want to add a bit of elegance, you can tie a stylish silk scarf around the handle.
Best tote bag for work: Dagne Dover Allyn Leather Tote
Dagne Dover
This tote was our pick for the best work bag overall — a hard-won prize. What makes this bag rise above the rest is the internal organization. It features a neoprene laptop sleeve, an interior water bottle compartment, and an array of little compartments for stashing cards, makeup, pens, and more. But the best part is that you would never know about all of its practical bells and whistles without peeking inside — on the outside, it’s sleek and unfussy.
Best tote bag for travel: Lo and Sons Seville Prima Tote
Lo and Sons
This tote is a bit of a splurge, but it’s designed intentionally to last you many years and many layovers. It’s made of high quality leather and comes in a 13-inch and 15-inch version to accommodate the size of your laptop. It also comes with a fabric shell that allows you to attach it to your suitcase, which takes a load off of your shoulder as you navigate through the airport.
Best small tote bag: Baggu Puffy Mini Tote
Baggu
Baggu is famous for its mega-popular reusable shopping bag. This tote is made from the same material, but with a puffy twist. Unlike the shopping bag, though, you can easily find your phone in the handy exterior pocket. This tote comes in the brand’s signature bright shades and patterns in addition to plain black.
Read our full review of Baggu’s reusable shopping bags.
Best everyday tote bag: Bandolier Carryall Tote Bag
Samantha Crozier/Insider
Bandolier’s Carryall Tote has straps that are reinforced on the place where they rest on your shoulder, so they won’t dig in even if you tote it around all day. And inside, you’ll find all the essentials for a great everyday tote — a laptop sleeve (which can also double as a divider to keep your belongings organized), a special pouch designed for your sunglasses, an interior key ring, and an array of zippered and non-zippered pockets. In addition, the pebeled leather is soft and ultra-luxirous to the touch.
Best mini designer tote: Marc Jacobs Mini Tote Bag
Nordstrom
The immensely popular Marc Jacobs tote is perhaps the trendiest piece on this list. The mini version comes with a crossbody strap so you can pick between clutching it like you’re on a runway or going hands-free. Though we love the compact size of the mini, the bag is also available in a medium and a large size in almost every color and material you could imagine. You can get it in leather, sequins, cozy teddy, and even terry cloth materials.
Best leather tote bag: M.Gemi Elena Grande Tote
M.Gemi
There are a few good leather picks on this list, but this one exemplifies the simple silhouette of the perfect leather tote. Unlike lots of leather bags that are restricted to relatively neutral colors, this tote comes in bright, jewel-tone shades like an emerald green. Another great feature is its wide mouth, which means it can expand to hold even the bulkiest of items.
Read our review of M. Gemi’s Felize Loafers and their Palestra Due Sneakers.
Best vegan leather tote bag: Everlane New Day Market Tote
Insider
We loved the old version of Everlane’s leather Day Market tote, but this iteration blends all the contemporary style of the original with a more sustainable, vegan material. The trademarked «bio-based leather» is meant to look and feel like traditional leather, but uses plant-based proteins.
The finish isn’t so far off from Saffiano leather, which means it’s quite durable and hard to scratch up. And though this bag doesn’t feel exactly like the real thing, it has the same sheen and look.
The tote is available in black and brown, in addition to a gorgeous dark burgundy color
Best canvas tote bag: L.L.Bean Boat and Tote
LL Bean
Like most of L.L.Bean’s products, this tote is designed to last you years. From carrying towels to the beach to hauling cans on your next grocery trip, this bag can withstand almost anything you put it through. It comes in every size from mini to extra large — and even includes a new option for longer handles so you can easily sling it over your shoulder.
For those that love a good personalization detail, L.L.Bean also offers monogramming. And you don’t just have to get initials — the bigger the bag, the more characters you can fit on it. This has spawned a hilarious trend of people getting funny phrases like «Can U Not» and «Unhinged» embroidered on their totes.
Best convertible tote bag: Caara Studio Tote
Insider
«Convertible bags are lifesavers for anyone who commutes on a subway, and this tote from Caraa is the best we’ve tested,» says Sally Kaplan, executive editor of Insider Reviews.
At first glance, the Caraa Studio Tote looks like a normal (albeit chic) leather tote bag — but you can actually transform it into a backpack on a whim. This versatile style makes it perfect for a day at the office paired with your best business attire, but at the end of the day you can take a load off and sling it on your back when you’re walking home or taking the subway. It’s also a great travel bag!

Best luxury tote bag: Mansur Gavriel Large Tote
Mansur Gavriel
All of Masur Gavriel’s bags are designed to evoke artistic simplicity — and their tote bag exemplifies this. The large tote is constructed from soft Italian leather, but its look is chic and Parisian. The black tote comes with a stunning, bright red interior that hints at luxury while still being understated. And if black and red isn’t your thing, you can also find a black version with a black interior and a caramel-colored version with a lighter interior.
The tote also comes in a mini version that you can use as a roomy, chic handbag.
Best largest tote bag: Madewell Piazza Oversized Tote
Madewell
If you want to carry an umbrella, a water bottle, and a cardigan and still have room for more, this is the pick for you. Madewell’s oversized tote bag is almost two feet wide and features straps that are long enough to sling over your shoulder, making it easy to carry. If you find it a little too roomy and want some organization, Madewell sells leather accessories in the exact same color, so you can get matching zippered pouches to keep your smaller essentials.
Best structured tote bag: Dagne Dover Classic Tote
Insider
This tote is structured, professional, and built with Dagne Dover’s signature focus on utility and clean style. Inside, there’s a bottle holder, a phone compartment, and a padded laptop sleeve, with a zippered top to keep your items protected.
«I want a product that fuses style with athlete-caliber function. The company’s Classic Tote does — and then some» says the former Service Journalism Editor-in-Chief, Ellen Hoffman. This bag is guaranteed not to slouch and even features little metal feet at the bottom so that it can stand firm.
Best beach tote bag: Yeti Camino 35 Carryall Tote
Yeti
The name of the game with Yeti is always durability — and this beach bag is super durable and completely waterproof. The tote is just as suited to holding sandy towels and sunscreen as it is to hauling muddy camping essentials on a wet day. If you want a long-lasting beach bag that can double as a carry-all for all kinds of outdoor activities, look no further.
Best zippered tote bag: Everlane Organic Canvas Weekender

This bag from Everlane not only has a big zipper that keeps the whole bag closed, it also has a zippered pocket on the inside to keep items like your phone or wallet extra secure.
