Article with the word president

In the following sentence:

I decided not to vote for your candidate for president.

I thought that the article «the» is needed for the word «president», because there is usually only one president. But I found that using the article is not correct, or at least not preferred.

Why does this sentence lack the article?

The sentence as it stands is thus.

  • I decided not to vote for your candidate for president.

A candidate stands for office. There is an implied «the office of» here.

  • I decided not to vote for your candidate for the office of president.

It is very usual to leave out that part. Usually people will only put that in when they are trying to be formal, or when they are using it to to make a speech and they want to have a particular rhetorical effect. It becomes a verbal fanfare that gives an annoucement an air of seriousness. And sometimes a newspaper will put it in a headline for siimilar motivations.

  • I give you our candidate for the office of president.

You can either put in the «the office of» part or you can leave it out. You can’t put in only part of it. So the following would be wrong.

  • I decided not to vote for your candidate for the president.

«The president» refers to the person holding the office. «President» refers to the office (position) itself.

давно хотела понять окончательно употребление определенного артикля с Президентами.
я правильно понимаю, что:
President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedev
но the President of the Russian Federation, если за этим не следуют имя-фамилия.

или вообще всё равно и кому как нравится, тот так и пишет?

In the following sentence, some students of mine wonder whether native speakers of English would use the definite article or not — and why!

A) — George W. Bush was

the/-

Governor of Texas before he became

the/-

President of the USA

I personally think either option is okay because the title only refers to one person and is capitalized (I know it varies whether people capitalize President/Governor or not — some only capitalize e.g. Governor in titles, as Governor Bush). I have, however, googled the usage of e.g. governor and found the following examples:

b) George W. Bush served as governor of Texas
c) George W. Bush served as the Governor of Texas
d) When Bush was governor of Texas…
e) He became the Governor of Texas (only refers to one person)
f) To run for governor of Texas (could be anyone)

Do you think the examples confirm my assumption — or are there a slight difference in meaning depending on whether you include/leave out the definite article i the examples above? (e.g. whether you talk about the function as opposed to a specific person).

    In versions A-E I think either with or without is fine and both versions are quite natural. In F I would only use it without the article. I don’t think I could explain why. (Not much help with inquiring students, I know.)

    Probably because it could be interpreted that you actually run for the person who’s the governor :)

    :) great example — I’ll make sure to share that with my students!
    I included it in the hope that some of you could «extract» some rules out of the given examples. So now we are one down (and it’s hopefully not any governor — nor any activists!). Thank you for your replies!

    Рассуждая о президенте РФ, мы не можем сказать «a president», потому что это не какой-то там регулярно новый президент, а понятный, наш определенный the President. Президент определенный, и артикль определенный, все сразу легко запомнить, и никаких сюрпризов. Чем меньше выбора (артиклей), тем легче. Когда возникает вопрос, какой артикль поставить, вспоминайте президента.

    Не самый очевидный пример, но все-таки. У нас было время, когда в новостях слово «войска» было принято давать с эпитетом «федеральные», потому что подразумевалось, что есть еще какие-то (понятно какие) войска. От этого периода осталось слово «федералы», которым называют уже всех силовиков, но то, что у нас сейчас «войска» без эпитетов, — это, между прочим, неплохой признак мирного времени.

    В каждом городе, кроме Москвы и Петербурга, есть площадь, про которую не надо уточнять, какая именно, — площадь она и есть площадь. Там обычно стоит памятник Ленину и какое-нибудь монументальное здание, чаще всего бывший обком, или горком, или театр, или библиотека. Провинциалов в Москве несложно узнать по этому «жду тебя на площади» (какую они имеют в виду — Красную? Пушкинскую?), а москвича в провинции — наоборот, по вопросу «какая?» применительно к небрежно произносимому слову «площадь».

    Когда на Новый год человек говорит, что «режет салатики», спрашивать, какие именно, не имеет смысла — это будет не «Цезарь» и не «Нисуаз». Это в ста случаях из ста оливье и «что-то еще» — неважно что, главное, что оливье есть всегда.
