Hi Group,

If I refer to myself as a turned off, or it something turns me off, really make sense to me. But what about, if I address to people and say «You Guys, are a bunch of turn offs» make sense to you or not?

    • #2

Maybe, but not really. I would say that you can describe yourself as a «turn off» but not a «turned off». That’s wrong. Anything in the world can be a turn off. Anything that makes you sad, depressed or anything that is unwanted or foul can be a turn off.

If you use turn off with plurals, you would say in this example you give:
«You guys are a turn off.» In other words, the whole group of guys are doing something you don’t like and that is a turn off. They are a turn off. You would never change the term turn off. It is not an adjective. It is used as a noun.

But if I say, «You Guys, are a bunch turn offs» make sense to you? Can you give me another example using this word in plural. A synonym of turn off is bring down and I’m missing another word is something down; I hope you can help me out on this other synonym.

No, this is weird to say.

    «Writing papers turns me off
«Your behavior really turns me off
«My mother was turned off to school after her teacher hit her.»
    «Bald men turn me off.»

I am sorry to mention this again all, but, Antonio, you have hit it again: «to turn off/on» is also sexual in nature.

«When you kiss my neck, it turns me on
«When you kiss my neck, I get turned on
    «You turn me on

«When you rub my feet, it turns me off
«Rubbing my feet turns me off

    Get it?…

    Well can I say,

    «Let’s turn on this party»
«I’m turn on with this party»
«The party turn me on and I started to dance»

«Let’s turn this party up!» (sounds better)
«I’m turned on by this party.» (possible, but sounds weird)
«The party turned me on, so I started to dance.»

Excellent explanation! One other tidbit not mentioned here, make sure when you use compound nouns like «turn-off» that you use a hyphen.

Punctuation can be tricky so it’s a real turn-off for a lot of people.

As «to turn-off» involves aversion to something, the correct preposition to use with this verb is «from,» not «to:»

«My mother was turned off from school after her teacher hit her.»
«My mother was turned on to school after a good report card.»

It socially stands for smtg which repulses you, lets you down or bothers…
    Ex:
Fiona: «I can’t bear your plebby friends… they’re a real turn off!» she said bluntly.

Eddy, what do you mean with your example, I don’t get it. For me the first example that you posted mean, kick out or expell, and the second one for me, means simply turn to or fall back on.

If I am right or if am wrong, please let me know.

    VenusEnvy

Antonio: Eddy is explaining to me that I used the wrong preposition with the verb «to turn off».

«My mother was turned off from school after her teacher hit her.»
After a teacher hit her, she no longer liked going to school.

«My mother was turned on to school after a good report card.»
After she received a good grade, she liked school more.

Turn off usually refers to something sexual. But sometimes it can mean that something doesn’t please you.
