Interesting, pretty, attractive, handsome

В английском языке в зависимости от описания внешности и абстрактных понятий используются разные слова.

interesting – интересный

Правило употребления:

  1. При описании внешности не употребляется.

    • I have read many interesting books. – Я прочитал много интересных книг.

pretty – интересный, привлекательный, милый, миловидный

Правило употребления:

  1. О детях и женщинах.

    • I met pretty girl. – Я встретил привлекательную девушку.

attractive – интересный, привлекательный

Правило употребления:

  1. Может употребляться как в отношении одушевленных предметов, людей обоих полов, так и неодушевленных предметов.

    • Не was an attractive fellow. – Он был интересным молодым человеком.

handsome – интересный, красивый, статный

Правило употребления:

  1. О внешности мужчин.

    • Не is a handsome man. – Он интересный (красивый) мужчина.

Какой сегодня хороший день! И погода хорошая! И ты, читатель, тоже очень хороший! Звучит однообразно, правда? К сожалению, чаще всего мы говорим на английском именно так: you are beautiful, the weather is beautiful, the idea is beautiful. Надо что-то менять.

Давайте оговоримся, что все-таки каждый синоним имеет свой оттенок и не подходит к каждому существительному. Самый простой пример — pretty и handsome. Pretty употребляется для описания женщин (красивая женщина), а handsome — для описания мужчин (красивый мужчина). Если вы назовете мужчину pretty, он решит, что вы намекаете на некоторые особенности его поведения или мировосприятия. Каждое слово заслуживает вашего внимания и знакомства со сложившейся практикой его употребления.

These words all describe people who are pleasant to look at.

beautiful • (especially of a woman or girl) very pleasant to look at:

Pretty is used most often to talk about girls. When it is used to talk about a woman, it usually suggests that she is like a girl, with small, delicate features.

attractive • (of a person) pleasant to look at, especially in a sexual way: She’s a very attractive woman.

attractive or good-looking?

If you describe sb as attractive you often also mean that they have a pleasant personality as well as being pleasant to look at; good-looking just describes sb’s physical appearance.
