Overtime is generally defined as an hour of work beyond the normal eight-hour workday. There are a few exceptions, so always check with your employer to be certain. Overtime is usually paid at a higher rate than regular pay, and is usually considered to be work in excess of 40 hours in a week.
The Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938 prohibits employers from paying employees less than $23.00 per hour for overtime work. This law is called the «time and a half» law. The FLSA also requires employers to provide overtime compensation for work in excess of 44 hours per week.
