I understood that:
- «last but one» means: one item before the last one (e.g. «Marta lives in the last house but one» means she lives in one house before the last one)
- «next but one» means: one item next to the one (e.g. «Marta lives in the next house but one» means she lives the house after the next one)
but what if I have a graduated scale of values and I want to refer to the next and the next but one bigger values bigger than a specified value X?
E.g.
I have a 10 mm hole in the whole. I wanna drill it to make it bigger. I have two tools with 20 and 30 mm diameter.
- «To make the hole 20 I have to use the next tool bigger than the hole»(?)
- «To make the whole 30 I have to use the next but one tool bigger then the hole»(?)

This could make for some entertaining talk, like «Who’s On First» but is not the right way to put it.
The «next» of «next house but one» cannot be reliably used outside of the phrase itself unless you are hoping to confuse the carpenter.
Also putting it as a modifier to bigger or smaller confounds the intended meaning. The phrases «next tool but one» allow a phrase to be more compact. These are less and less useful the more complex you meaning gets.

Here are two examples of using ‘but’ as a preposition. Please, help me with the math
Note the useful expressions next but one, last but one.
- They live in the house next but one to Mary. (i.e. two houses away from Mary)
- Is this the final candidate? ~ No, it’s the last but one. (i.e. there are two more people to be interviewed)

«Next but one» — it seems that there is one house between ‘their one’ and ‘Mary’s one’; I read it as the house next to the one which is after Mary’s one, so thus ‘their house’ is only one house away from Mary. Please, explain what is wrong in my understanding of

However, the word «but» is not so exact. It means «one away from» — plus or minus. That ‘one away from’ can be in either direction.
«Last but one» means one away from last.
«Next but one» means one away from next.
Does that explain it?

‘One house away’ is unclear. Suppose I live at number 14, and next to that is 15, and next to that is 16. From my point of view at 14, the next house is 15, and the next but one is 16 (and the next but two is 17). That is clear. But which is the house ‘one house away’? It sounds as if it could be 15 next to me; or it could mean the house that is separated by me by one house — that is, 16 is one house away and 15 is that ‘one house’. I would be uncertain if I heard this from a native speaker — or one street away, one county further west, etc.
Don’t be misled by the two meanings of ‘last’. ‘Last’ can be opposed to ‘next’: the next train or the last train (the one that has just left). In this sense, the last train but one was the train that left, er, two trains ago. But this is unlikely: we wouldn’t count backwards with ‘but one’. Rather, the last candidate is the final candidate (the 16th out of 16, say), not the previous one, and the last but one is the next-to-final one (the 15th of the 16).

Good point. However whilst this applies to trains, I’m not certain it applies to houses. Doesn’t «the last house» always mean the final house?
P.S. On reflection, if you are walking along a street, then the last house that you passed is not necessarily the final house. So maybe that’s important. Is that an issue Annakrutitskaya?

I guess, it’s just the lack of context and rather confusing explanation by bbc; it would be great if precise explanations are used, when available, especially by such illustrious resources

In this situation, how many candidates are there in the waiting room for you? For me there are two of them looking nervously at each other, trying to decide which one is prettier.
I am not sure where your argument is going with this or why you are missing bits out.
In my post #15 I was referring solely and specifically to your post #14. It was that that I was arguing with. I have nothing to say about long legs and short skirts in the context of this thread, nor about a BBC quote that does not include the topic of the thread «but one».
