Everyone can express themselves and be in control of their own websites.

I wonder if I could use in charge of to replace in control of. If not, why not? Thank you for your help.

    Hi, QD.

I think you can use either in this case. The difference of nuance between the two is very subtle, and I’m not sure it makes any difference here. «In charge of» suggests that you are the recognized leader, decision-maker; «in control of» suggests that you shape decisions, whether or not you are seen. Really, though, I think these distinctions are too fine—either option would work just fine here.

    I’d say …and control their own…

But what exactly do you mean by «control»?

Do you mean «…create their own website.«?

    Thanks, tanager.
I still wonder if they are about the same in other contexts such as:
    1. Who is in charge/control of cleaning this office up?
    2. Who is in charge/control of ordering lunch?
    3. Who is in charge/control of this class?

    Thanks, Angel.
I think it means «control their own website/blog.»

Yes, I think I see the distinction you’re making. Owning your own website means you’re in control of its content.

And, in my opinion, being in charge of any situation means you control what goes on in it, too.

The answer to 3. in both of its forms, should be «the teacher». The only difference is that the teacher is automatically «in charge» of the class, because he/she is the leader and is responsible, but maybe the teacher doesn’t have «control» because there are some serious behavoir problems in the classroom which he/she can’t manage.

«Who’s in charge of this class?» The teacher.
«Who’s in control of this class?» Noone. (It should be the teacher!)

    Hi, Dictionary.com defines as follows:

    in control (of)

    in charge (of)
Example: She is very much in control (of the situation).
It seems to me that they are almost synonym, but I am sure you (native-speaker) can distinguish the nuance between them.

    «in charge of» = responsible for
«in control of» = in the position of being able to direct and manipulate.

Hi, QD. I don’t want to confuse the issue any! While it’s possible to use «in charge of» and «in control of» slightly differently (as least in my mind!), they are pretty much synonymous. You could ask either version of the three questions to get the answer «the cleaning service» in 1., «the office secretary» in 2., or «the teacher» in 3. My own preference would be to use «Who’s in charge of … » to find out the person responsible in all of these cases.
