I’m interested to know which other word occurring in the same sentence the word «also» could modify when used with «not.»
Could «also» as used with «not» modify any word occurring in the same sentence?

For example,

Could the sentence

«Mary also does not speak Japanese.»

be understood to mean both cases below?

1) Tom does not speak Japanese and Tom is not the only one who doesn’t among my friends. Mary doesn’t, either.

2) English is not the only language Mary does not speak among that list of languages.

(I made up these sentences to provide examples for discussion).

Hello, Kay Champs. Although I’d understand «Mary also does not speak Japanese», it would sound unnatural to me. I like «Mary doesn’t, either.»

Could «Mary also does not speak Japanese.» be understood to mean both cases below?

You are correct in saying that this sentence is ambiguous and its meaning could be interpreted either way. For this reason, like owlman5 suggests, you would do better to rephrase a sentence like this.

Hi, thank you owlman5 for your reply.:)
I’m a translator dealing with formal documents and think «either» is not appropriate in my register.

Now I have two guestions as to your comments. You say that «Mary also does not speak Japanese» does not sound natural. Does it mean that «also» + «not» could mean more than one situation depending on the context ? That is my biggest concern here, although my sentence happened to be a poor one. Another question is, what alternative would you suggest without using «either» to remain appropriate in a formal register.

    Kay Champs

Thank you DocPenfro for your comments. Seems like my post crossed with yours, DocPenfro. From your comments, I now know «also» could modify different words in the same sentence depending on the context.

If my examples sound awkward, how would you paraphrase the sentence for two different cases above?

    • #6

I could imagine myself saying this sentence in ways that would shift its emphasis, depending on where I put the logical stress in speech, e.g.

    1. John does not speak Japanese. Mary also does not speak Japanese.
    2. Mary does not speak Portuguese. Mary also does not speak Japanese.
    3. Mary does not understand Japanese. Mary also does not speak Japanese. (although much of the time understanding is easier than speaking :) )

Well, Kay, if «either» isn’t fancy enough, you could always use «nor»: Tom does not speak Japanese, nor does Mary.

    • #8

boozer, thank you for solutions in spoken language. I think it’s a good suggestion anyway. Japanese tend to forget that method.:)

    Now, owlman5,
OK, Id’ go for that whenenever I can. But translation doesn’t always work that way. I mean, for example, Tom appears lots of lines back way up in the document and now you have only Mary in a sentence. So you have to deal only with «Mary,» «speak,» and «Japanese» besides «also» + «not» as members of the sentence. Voila.

    • #9

In writing, you’re dependent on context to disambiguate the sentence, so if the context is too far away, this sentence can’t be understood. In isolation, it’s not clear how to read it. For meaning (1) the primary accent is on either ‘Mary or Mary ‘also, while for (2) it’s on Japa’nese, as boozer says. I don’t know how to pronounce the sentence if I don’t know its meaning. And it’s not obvious how to disambiguate it by some minor change such as moving the adverb, which sometimes does work.

    Kay Champs

    • #10

    Thank you entangledbank for comments.

I read somewhere that in formal writing, also» is put close to the word to be modified to so it is clear what is modified by also because you cannot put oral stress on the word in writing.

I wonder if «Mary also does not speak Japanese», already an awkward sentence :(, could be rewritten to read:
«Mary does not speak also Japanese.»

«Also Mary does not speak Japanese.»

    • #11

In writing, you’re dependent on context to disambiguate the sentence, so if the context is too far away, this sentence can’t be understood. In isolation, it’s not clear how to read it.

Another way of saying this is that we cannot use «also» without an earlier sentence that will make the disambiguation/referent clear. It’s analogous to saying simply «He not only speaks Japanese.» in isolation without the «but also ….» completion. This could refer to his ability to speak other languages

    or

his ability to read and write Japanese. Once we have the completion (=context) we understand the meaning of the beginning.

    • #12

Tank you Julian for the explanation to help me understand. I may have exaggerated a bit when I said lots of lines back, though it could sometimes be say 100 words back. (A single sentence could consist of 100 words in the documents I handle). But the context is not in the same sentence anyway.

    • #13

If the sentence is so far away as to cause potential confusion, you could justify repeating the referent/comparison sense when you come to use the «also» sense: the very distance will draw attemtion away from the repetition!

    Kay Champs

    • #14

I think julian’s suggestion should be the best way.

But I would say translators are not allowed to supplement the original text even when it is better to do so from a viewpoint of clarity especially because of the nature of the original,  legal documents.

    • #15

I think julian’s suggestion should be the best way.

But I would say translators are not allowed to supplement the original text even when it is better to do so from a viewpoint of clarity especially because of the nature of the original, legal documents.

That has to be a tough issue for translators! Conveying the same meaning/intent/sense may not always be possible without using different/supplemental constructions, but I would tend to give priority to translation of the the meaning over keeping some (untranslatable) structure :) Good luck!

    1. Carole Scofield:

Carole Scofield told the news station Carole Scofield thinks this is the second time this same bear has broken into their home looking for food. The first time it broke down their front door. In total, the couple said they have had trouble with bears on six different occasions during the 20 years they’ve lived in South Lake Tahoe. Lesa Johnston, with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, told KOLO8 that bears normally rummage through trash cans in search of food, but they’re also known to look elsewhere. At some point in the bears’ life, they gain some type of food reward by breaking in a cabin or a home, so they remember that, so the behavior is likely to be repeated, Lesa Johnston said. We are very lucky, both major break-ins, we were very lucky. I know a lot of people have not been. It has been very, very costly.

    2. President Nicolas Maduro:

We’re firming up a financial alliance with important banks in Qatar, that are giving us sufficient oxygen to cover the fall in oil revenue, we’re raising financing for several billion dollars, not only for 2015, but also for 2016.

    3. Marcus Molinaro:

While I unequivocally believe in second chances, I also believe in the rule of law, desperate to ward off a challenge from Cynthia Nixon, Andrew Cuomo’s unilateral action is an insult to the legislature, the courts, crime victims and the voters of the State of New York.

    4. Michelle Ugenti-Rita:

Think about it. It’s election season and you’ve taken upon yourself to perhaps knock on someone’s door or multiple doors and collect their ballot with, I’m assuming, the intent to turn the ballot into the ballot box, but, in the event that doesn’t happen, regardless of why it doesn’t happen, you can see it that that has (an) impact on…that person’s ballot to the election box. But, then also on the outcome. So, it’s not a practice that really has enough benefit to justify continuing to have it. So, that’s why I sponsored the bill and the court agreed that it was within our statutory and constitutional authority.

Do we put comma after also?

The words too and also generally do not need commas with the exception of also at the beginning of the sentence. Historically too and also had commas before them at the end of the sentence. In the middle of the sentence, too and also are simple adverbs, and there is still no need for commas.

    Can we say and also?

You can use “and also” together. In some contexts, the phrase expresses what you might be trying to say better than the use of “and” or “also” alone. When in doubt always go for the option that uses fewest words.

What do you put before also?

When used for rhetoric purposes, such as a parenthetical component, we may put a comma before “also”, particularly at the end of the sentence. However, when used as a conjunctive adverb, a mandatory comma is placed after it to alert the reader for a quick coffee break.

    Where do you put also?

Basically you need to remember that we use ‘also’ to add information to something we have already said and you need to place it in the sentence next to the thing or idea that you are adding. I hope this makes it clear!

    What is too used for?

To is a preposition with several meanings, including “toward” and “until.” Too is an adverb that can mean “excessively” or “also.” Just to be clear: two is pronounced the same as to and too, but it can’t be used instead of either of them because it’s a number.
