My upper tooth cuts into the same place on my lower lip like a heavy axe five or six times a year. It hurts like crazy. I’m telling you I’m careful, but it lands on there against my will. I can’t pronounce v’s and f’s easy. It hurts, and I can’t stand it. Well, it’s killing me now.

The above is what I wrote just a while ago; however, I feel more than just a bit awkward about it. My gut feeling tells me ‘against my will’ connotes you did whatever you did not in accordance with your desire or preference, after some deliberation. But in the above example the action was done in a quick motion without thinking. In the dictionary example below, ‘against my will’ is used along the line.

Let it be known that I took this course of action against my will. (The Free Dictionary)

Am I right about the usage?

I’d say your gut feeling is correct. I’d say «but I can’t help doing it»/»I can’t help myself».

  • #3

I agree. ‘Against one’s will’ is more applicable in situations where there is some form of coercion in operation. Whilst it’s clear that you have no will to hurt yourself in this way, there is no sense that you are being forced to bite yourself.
It’s more a case of ‘despite my best efforts, I continue to accidentally bite myself’.
