Looks like you may have a virus or other malware. Get your updated antivirus program and boot into Safe Mode. Note that some viruses can hide from your normal antivirus program, so you really need to scan in Safe Mode. To enter in Safe Mode when you turn on first, press F8 on every seconds until you get the menu, and then select Safe Mode. Then run a complete system scan.

If that suits him fine. If this is not the case, use system restore to go back to an earlier date at the beginning of the problem. To run system restore, click Start-> programs-> Accessories-> System Tools-> system restore. Click on the box that says show more restore points.
—
You can check the corrupted system files. Open an administrator command prompt and run SFC if the above does not help. Click START, and then type CMD in the search box, right-click on CMD. EXE and click run as administrator. Then, from the command prompt type sfc/scannow.
—
Finally if all else fails, you can look at the rather cryptic system event log. To do that click on start-> Control Panel-> administration-> event viewer tools. Once in Event Viewer system log-click and scroll entries looking for these «error» with indicator see if you can find guidance on where the problem may be.
`
When you get your system in good working condition, I invite you to back up your system up to an external hard drive and make it regular periodic updates.

I hope this helps. Good luck.

All of the files in Word 2007 suddenly turned into generic DOCX files when you check the properties. All the icons have also changed. Opened my backup disk, and now those that changed everything. All icons on the desktop changed to display the logo of Word (W)
Separated from this thread.
My HP laptop running on Windows 7 Home Basic 64-Bit. I have Microsoft Essentials antivirus. All icons on the desktop has changed to display the logo of Word (W). When I try to open programs, they all open the new document page in Word with «File Conversion — explorer.exe» dialog box. This happened after I inserted a borrowed Memorystick. Why can’t I clean my pc with Microsoft Essentials?
Hi Kata’ntja,
If you can access the internet in any way, If you use Windows 7, go to http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/19449-default-file-type-associations-restore.html. and run the program to restore the EXE and possibly LNK file associations. That should restore your programs.

File associations are used by Windows to open a file automatically with an application which can be read when the file is double-clicked. Is the file association is corrupted you can deal with this kind of behavior.

I installed the latest update of Windows. All updates. However, I find myself with the yellow warning icon in the bar of tasks and install when closing down.
Description of the problem: a few days ago I installed the latest update of Windows. All updates, or so I think by the Windows Update Web page telling me so. However I find myself with the yellow warning icon telling me the KB2729450 update is ready on my computer and needs installation. However, the web page says that it successfully installed. I see the update in Add/REMOVE programs. I’ve deleted and reinstalled but still have the icon telling me to install it. Even when you turn off the computer the message is for me to install, but I think that it has already installed successfully. How can I get rid of these warnings?
Operating system: Windows XPHi depreciated,
Thanks for posting in the Microsoft community!
If I understand correctly, you receive a warning to install the update, even if it has already been installed. I’ll try to help you the question.
(1) did you make any changes before the show?
The update that you are warned with seems to be question of the .net framework. I have you provided the link that will repair your .net framework.

Windows 7 desktop icons are all links
Have a new windows 7. flying over my photos from the old computer. Some show a picture, so I right click for hopefully display image in an another photo viewer. I chose the windows photo viewer. All icons on the desktop has changed so that icon and I can’t open anything. They are all links
‘All icons on the desktop changed to icon and I cannot open anything’. I assume this is the icon of the windows photo viewer?
I think that what’s happened is that you used ‘open with’ on a shortened. You can check by going to control panel > programs > associate a file type or Protocol with a scroll of program LNK partner should say unknown. I suspect now is said however: Photo Viewer.
If so, there are two ways, this can be fixed. The easy way requires editing the registry but then you want to go this route.
1. click on Start Menu, type regedit in start search and press ENTER. Right click on regedit search results and run it as an administrator.
2. navigate to the following registry branch:
NtVersion ntVersionExplorerFileExts [ext]
Replace the [ext] with the real extension of the file you want to restore the file type association to return to the original Windows 7 by default (probably .lnk). If you unsure, simply browse through all the Sub-touche under FileExts.
3. delete the subkey named UserChoice.
4. exit the registry editor.
The second method is a little more work, can’t fix it, but does not involve the registry.
Since the default action is caused by the user (as it was accidental) choice, you can be able to restore everything simply by creating a new user account. See if the icons to return to their natural state, then knit. If so, just move all your files and folders and delete the old account. If you use Outlook, you also need to reset where it looks for files of Outlook, but it can be automatic (do not try to start Outlook until what everything is copied on the property). If you use this method, remember to copy the hidden appdata folder. Just show all before you begin the copy.

Have you tried to go to customize and change your theme? Maybe redefine things will help the issue. You can also try re — install (or looking for a newer version of) your graphics card driver. You can normally find this by going to the manufacturer of your computer site, click Help, and then by entering your model number.
A few guesses. Weird problem!

Display of Windows Vista, the icons and all THE GRAPHICS suddenly pixelated, appear low quality at the highest resolution and colors
Please help, out of nowhere on my screen — background, all icons, all graphics (including the Explorer and other programs) have become rough and pixelated and seem very low qualty even if my display is set to the highest resolution management settings and color. I’ve not been able to find a way to restore and have no idea why it is doing this in the first place. It’s really bothering me, it’s hard to read (text appears fuzzy and broken up, not smooth and sharp, icons have white or another pixelation around them and do not have the ‘look of glass’.) I was wondering if one of the old games my children changed my settings somewhere but I’ve lived every control panel I find and have not been able to correct the problem. Even the buttons (back, forward, refresh, etc.) in Explorer have bad pixelation. That’s happened? Help! Thank you
I would also update the drivers, firmware or software for your monitor at the same time. Also, if you have another monitor, swap them to see if the problem goes away or moves — then we can pretty much reduce the question to the screen and not the video card (and if the updated drivers do not resolve this problem, then it’s a hardware problem and you can either take a workshop of computer service repair or simply a replacement of purchase screen.)
I hope this helps.
Good luck!

Vista on the computer using hp laptop and when office comes to the screen after start, all icons and programs are amplified.
This just happened to new start-up of three days. Prior to this time everything worked very well. Also it some dialog boxes asking to click to launch an application platform that we know nothing about. We have looked for answers and went to the Control Panel, easy access and off Magnifier. But it is magnified. All icons and applications and the magnified programs.are. No new programs have been installed, no fonts won’t changed, none of the DPI changed by us. . Some have suggested to go into the registry, but I’m not here. There are available restore points to restore. I don’t know why there are no restore points. Even went in safe mode and couldn’t find the restore point. Our solutions may be next = copy data, use the restore disk, and all reinstall. GOSH, there must be an easier than treatment… Or go to the computer repair shop. Suggestions? Please, I beg you!

Windows XP home — icons arranged in order alphabetical Z — A
Hi, I have no idea why my computer started to do this, but now all my MS explore windows arange al icons in them first with the shortcuts folders Z — A, then Z — A files, although if I arrange me by type, file extensions are A — Z, but the file names are Z — A in their breast.
If I click on «organize by type», for example, once again, it’s always a — Z on everything except the file extensions are now Z — A too.
The same thing in all my ‘open’ and ‘save’ dialog boxes. Microsoft will not give free assistance because he told me to go check with the manufacturer of my computer (I have a Toshiba Equium MX40).
I tried messing around with a case until he is almost back to normal and to «apply the settings to all folders», but the parameters do not change on all folders and sooner or later, this issue will return to the messed up order. All apply to all folders seems to do is link pairs of files randomly so that changes to one affect the other, which is annoying when he connects things like ‘my images’ in ‘my computer’ so if I do 1 miniatures, they are two thumbnails.
Is it possible to stop it so weird quality? I would rather not reinstall windows. My microsoft office is too weird, but I’ll post that elsewhere.
First of all, it certainly isn’t a problem of laptop but deliver only Microsoft Windows.
I found a very nice sites on the configuration of the Solution Explorer.
She explains how to customize the display, adding categories to the details view, using the folder models, etc.

All icons are shaded and wavy after installation of the patch and restart (win xp sp3). How can I fix it?
After you have installed the latest patches, all icons are shaded with vertical lines undulate on them. Computers desktop and in Windows Explorer. Application windows appear clear, but icnos in their midst are the same way. What should I do to fix this anomaly?
-J’ tried the obvious desktop refresh. No change.
-J’ rebooted in safe mode, and then back to standard mode. No change. What else can I try?
Hi JimGoode,
Unfortunately, the screenshots are not available in the post.
Given that the question does not appear in safe mode, then it is possible that some third-party programs installed on the computer is causing the problem.
I suggest that you put the computer in a clean boot state and check if it helps.
To help resolve the error and other messages, you can start Windows XP by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. This type of boot is known as a «clean boot». A clean boot helps eliminate software conflicts.
See the link below to learn more about how to clean boot.
How to configure Windows XP to start in a «clean boot» State

Reset the computer to start as usual
When you are finished troubleshooting, follow these steps to reset the computer to start as usual:
(a) click Start, type msconfig in the search box and press ENTER.
(b) If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password or click on continue.
(c) under the general tab, click the Normal startup option, and then click OK.
(d) when you are prompted to restart the computer, click on restart.
If the previous step fails, then use SkyDrive download screenshots of icons.
Use SkyDrive download collected files and after shot/screenshot.

Topic: All Desktop Icons Changed to Word (Read 25504 times)

Our computer or laptop has multiple numbers of programs installed. Our prime programs are Microsoft Office, Adobe Reader, Google Chrome, Firefox and much more. All these applications have their own format, but there might be some possibilities that all your desktop icons may get changed to word or pdf. For that, you need to bring out some solution and change the default programs as per the requirement.
The key reason for all desktop icons changed to the word or pdf is an issue with the default programs. Changing the default programs is the ultimate solution to the issue. Below mentioned is the simple method to fix the issue.
1) Open the Run dialogue ( Start Run or (Win) + R)
2) Type Regedit then click [OK ] or type Enter
3) Navigate to
HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerFileExts
4) Search for the .lnk extension
5) Select the same and delete it
6) After deleting the file you can reboot or restart your computer or laptops.
After following these steps all the Desktop icons will get changed to their actual format. I hope these steps are easy to understand and implement.

“All Desktop icons shows only text, my start menu doesn’t work, and my taskbar only show the icons on the right! I tried it in Safe Mode, and still the same! Please help me!!”
All your desktop shortcuts are showing text only, without any icons? However, you can still click the shortcut text to open Windows Explorer or your application. In this tutorial we’ll show you a simple way to fix the desktop icons missing problem in Windows 10.
How to Fix: Desktop Icons Show Only Text in Windows 10?
- Press the Windows key + R to open the Run box. Type regedit and press Enter.
- In the left pane of Registry Editor, navigate to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerShell Icons
- Right-click on Shell Icons and select either Delete or Rename (rename it to whatever you want).
- Reboot your computer and you’ll find all your desktop icons are coming back. It’s that simple!
