Obviously, when I go to Google this or search virtually anywhere I get a list of state abbreviations.
But I’m curious, what would the proper way be to abbreviate the actual word state?

I would recommend either «ST» or «St», without a period (to avoid confusion with the abbreviation for «street»). I live in Washington (the state, not the city), and «Washington St» wouldn’t strike me as odd if I read it in a magazine or newspaper. It doesn’t look like there’s a very rigidly defined standard on this.
But then, NBC seems to like «Washington St.»

In the US, the word state is generally not abbreviated. When used as parts of acronyms, it is simply referenced as S
NYS (New York State)
LSU (Louisiana State University)
SUNY (State University of New York)
Use of ST or St with or without periods is likely to result in confusion with street.

I’ve seen mailing addresses use «St Hwy» to mean «State Highway»
Consider this possibility…
10152 St Hwy 76
vs
609 South St
«St» can mean State or Street

Abbreviation for the word initial?
what is the abbreviation for the word initial
As you know, there are 50 states in the United States of America. Many times the state abbreviations are simply the first and last letter of that state such as California – CA or Maryland – MD, these are fairly easy to remember.
Other times the 2 letters that make up the state abbreviation such as Michigan – MI, Mississippi – MS don’t work this way making it hard to remember the state abbreviation for all of the states.

If the state is 2 words like North Dakota, West Virginia, Rhode Island, or New Hampshire, it’s always the first letter of each word.
One thing they always have in common is the first letter is the first letter of the state. As I mentioned, with the one word states, the second letter is not always the last as you can see from the list of state abbreviations below.

The state of…
Always lowercase the word state in constructions such as, «the state of Michigan.» In general, the construction the «state of» is unnecessary and should not be used, except as a nonspecific reference to the government of a state or in cases such as «state of Washington» or «state of New York,» to distinguish between the state and the well-known city of the same name.
Use: Funding was provided by the state of Michigan (meaning the government).
Use: He was born in Michigan (not the state of Michigan).
Spell out state names in most cases
The names of the 50 U.S. states should be spelled out in general text, whether standing alone or in conjunction with a city, town, village or military base. See the cities entry for a list of large cities that never need to be identified by state.
When to use abbreviations
Use the state abbreviations listed at the end of this section only in the following cases.
- In conjunction with the name of a city, town, village or military base in most datelines, use the traditional abbreviation.
- In lists and tabular material, use the traditional abbreviation.
- In short-form listings of party affiliation, use the traditional abbreviation (D-Ala., R-Mont.).
- When used in an address, use the two-letter USPS abbreviation. (For more information, write to Joan Jones, 23 Any St, Greensburg PA 15601-2001.) See also addresses. When used to clarify location, the state name should be spelled out. (We traveled to DeKalb, Illinois, for the football game.) If the construction includes a ZIP code, it’s an address; if it does not, it’s a location.
When writing news stories, no state name is necessary in the body of the story if it is the same as the dateline. So, for example, if your dateline reads «KALAMAZOO, Mich.,» then every city you list is presumed to be in Michigan. If a city is located in another state, you need to spell out that state name fully.
