I am very excited to begin 2019 in my new role as Executive Director of Domestic Violence Services of Southwestern PA (DVSSP)! It is a privilege to work with a resourceful and committed staff, a seasoned and accessible Board of Directors, and a group of devoted and willing volunteers! Who wouldn’t be excited, right?! First, let me tell you a little bit about myself.
In January of 2005, I was hired with the agency as the part-time Volunteer Coordinator. Intensified trainings to ensure volunteers were better equipped to do their work increased volunteer involvement. Volunteer opportunities also expanded, so that volunteers could do everything a paid staff person could do. As a result, volunteer hours increased by 500%. Several years later, I became the full-time Education and Training Coordinator growing the department from one and one half people to five people. DVSSP began working with AmeriCorps and, after three years of showing the position had become self-sustaining, the AmeriCorps volunteer became our current full-time Donations & Resources Coordinator. As a result, we are now better stewards of our community donations! As an online presence grew increasingly necessary, we were able to branch out into the territory of social media. In 2015, due to agency expansion and the fact that DVSSP was offering services in Washington, Greene, and Fayette counties, I was named the first Director of Operations. During three years in that position, my focus was to coach supervisors into leaders, improve efficiencies of operations, increase accountability of staff, and improve and expand overall services to our clients.
Prior to my work at DVSSP, I earned my degree in psychology, worked for Children and Youth Services as an investigator specializing in sexual assault, taught parenting and behavior modification classes, was the Executive Director of a homeless shelter, and assisted with the HR/financial piece of a family business that out-grew my skill set. I have a wonderful husband of 33 years, two amazing children, four adorable grandchildren, and have resided in southwestern PA since 1989.
As for the future of DVSSP, I plan to continue our former Executive Director’s vision of moving DVSSP into trauma-informed-care service delivery, which is built on consistency, predictability, clarity, and transparency. DVSSP will continue to strive for those attributes in everything we do. It is both humbling and satisfying to see the strides clients are able to make when choosing to take advantage of all the services we currently offer. I am hopeful to expand those services and am also extremely optimistic that our ambitious and ever-focused Prevention Education Department will lead us into the next decade focused on eradicating domestic violence and improving our communities with their prevention efforts.
With the assistance of our Board of Directors, my desire for DVSSP is simple; to become even better than it already is, for each staff and volunteer to become better, and for the services we provide to our clients to become better! As I write to you today, I am both optimistic and cautious.
You have likely read or heard recent news reports about increasing xenophobia and bigotry facing Asian Americans. Nationally, we are seeing rising incidences of bullying, harassment, and hate crimes against Asian communities. A recent report by the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism at Cal State University Bakersfield revealed that while hate crimes decreased overall by seven percent in 2020, those targeting Asian people rose by nearly 150 percent.
We condemn all of these hateful actions that are targeting the Asian American community.
While the number of hate crimes in our local DMV community seem to not rise to the level witnessed in other cities, recent news headlines including those in Maryland, Virginia, and DC may foretell a rising trend of anti-Asian hate, violence, discrimination, and bullying in our region. AALEAD is monitoring these situations and will continue to provide updates to all of you.
AALEAD’s primary concern is to ensure the safety of our Asian American youth and their loved ones. Research has shown that persistent bullying can lead to or worsen feelings of isolation, rejection, exclusion and despair, as well as depression and anxiety. This bigotry, coupled with a year-long pandemic, has exacerbated issues for Asian Americans. Here are some of the actions we have recently taken to provide additional support and continue to promote leadership and identity development with our youth:
- AALEAD staff is routinely surveying youth to ask if they are directly experiencing harassment/bullying, and their observations of anti-Asian harassment
- AALEAD has increased one-on-one and small group check-ins between AALEAD staff and our youth to identify any issues and provide support
- AALEAD is discussing anti-Asian hate crimes and youth upstander roles against discrimination in our youth programs, and have launched targeted campaigns and service projects for youth to take an active role against these issues
- AALEAD is continuing our cross-cultural workshops that aim to build understanding and power across communities, and to discuss issues of identity and connections with others to build empathy and understanding.
The actions above are our immediate responses. Moving forward, AALEAD will be taking additional steps to address the underlying issues and causes of this hate, and to ensure AALEAD is a voice for the AAPI community. We recognize our role in working with other communities to advance a world where hate has no place. We look forward to working with you to make this a reality.
