around
ROUND, AROUND, ABOUT
Предлоги round, around и about ‘вокруг’ могут взаимозаменяться. Round и around взаимозаменяются как предлоги места: to sit round a table и to sit around a table, a wall round a town и a wall around a town. Предлоги движения round и around также могут взаимозаменяться: to move round the sun и to move around the sun. При этом сохраняется некоторое различие в оттенках значения – round имеет в виду прежде всего движение с возвращением в отправной пункт, a around подчеркивает мысль о движении по определенной орбите: to run round a table (a house), to travel around the line of the equator. Предлог about близок по значению к around и в ряде случаев взаимозаменяется с ним, причем about часто имеет в виду не всю линию окружности, а лишь ее часть: предложение a throng crowded around a man означает, что человек был окружен толпой со всех сторон; a throng crowded about a man может предполагать, что человек стоял, прижавшись спиной к стене, и только с трех сторон был окружен толпой. About может и не предполагать движения по окружности и в этом случае соответствует русскому по в значении ‘в пределах известного пространства, в чём-л., где-л.’: to walk about the garden, to help mother about the house, things scattered about the room. To travel around the world имеет в виду кругосветное путешествие с конечным возвращением в отправной пункт и соответствует русскому ‘совершить путешествие вокруг света’. То travel about the world означает ‘путешествовать по свету’. Наречие round означает ‘кругом, по кругу’: to turn round ‘повернуться кругом’, the sun goes round ‘солнце совершает движение по кругу’. Around имеет значение ‘со всех сторон, везде, повсюду’: woods stretching for miles around ‘леса, протянувшиеся на много миль кругом’, things Scattered around (или about) ‘разбросанные кругом (повсюду) вещи’. Round в этом случае употреблено быть не может.
