You do that sometimes? Hang around somewhere, not really doing anything, just observing, watching, looking at, fantasising about other people, wondering what their lives might be like and whether your thoughts reflect reality…? So that was a rather long description of a concept that could be explained with one word, right? Be happy to hear then that now there’s a word for this watching-wondering about-observing-looking at-fantasising about-peeping at-other-people: to wolp. Yes. to wolp. (intransitive verb. or maybe you could use it transitively, too (“to wolp at someone“)…!?)

Etymology:

May 11, 2011. The Chaplaincy. Two students. (Linguistics students, obviously.) Procrastinating. A list of words (watch, spy, observe, look at, imagine, thoughts, wonder, peep…), a list of ideas (woslait, slowait, plowsay, sloyay, sloway, soway, owai…) and one outcome: wolp

The best thing about wolp: It works cross-linguistically! (there are only some slight differences in pronunciation)

  • English: to wolp
I wolp, you wolp, he/she/it wolps, we wolp, you wolp, they wolp
  • German: wolpen
ich wolpe, du wolpst, er/sie/es wolpt, wir wolpen, ihr wolpt, sie wolpen
  • French: wolper
je wolpe, tu wolpes, il/elle wolpe, nous wolpons, vous volpez, ils/elles wolpent
  • Spanish: wolpar
wolpo, wolpas, wolpa, wolpamos, wolpáis, wolpan
  • Italian: wolpare
wolpo, wolpi, wolpa, wolpiamo, wolpate, wolpano
  • Slovenian: volpati
jaz volpam, ti volpaš, on/ona volpa, mi volpamo, vi volpate, oni/one volpajo
  • Russian:
  • Arabic:
w(u)lb(a), yaw(u)lb(u), al-w(u)lb (yes, it is a weak verb but we want to keep it nice and simply, right? so ‘regular’ conjugation it is!)

(and the list goes on… (!))

BANG.

Spread the word. Literally.

wolp

I don’t usually read airline magazines, but I saw this factoid on the airline mag. of the person sitting next to me. A new word is birthed every 98 minutes! Fifteen new words every day- can you imagine that?  I also read recently that there are 5 times more words in the English language since Shakespeare’s time.  As I reflected on this, I thought of several new words I heard in just one week:

1) Growteau: a cross between growth and plateau when speaking of church growth.  A pastor at the Church Solutions conference stated that their children’s ministry grew from 600 to 900 — growth.  But during the same time the frequency of attendance has dropped by almost 1 sunday per month — plateau.

2) Bromance: although this has been alive in pop culture, I heard a worship pastor refer to his feelings for his senior pastor with this term- carrying the tone of deep mutual respect.  Remember that «brother» was a widely used biblical metaphor!

3) 100Xer: A term coined by the Leadership Network and Half Time teams last week as we discussed the missional core of the organization. A 100Xer is a leader with the capacity for a hundredfold yield in kingdom fruitfulness based on Jesus teaching in the gospels.

4) Makeunder: (Verses the makeover.) Just read this with regard to the benefits of wearing less make-up: «The makeunder applies to those who require longer than an hour to put on their face; women who blow out sockets styling their hair; the ladies whose clothes are so loud they should come with earplugs.» «Confidence, maturity and security also tend to go hand-in-hand with a pared down look that favors simplicity over excess.»  Review Journal

What are some new words that you have either created or heard?

Not in fact a misunderstanding of «word is bond». It means that something is a new and important idea. It has been in common usage at least since the release of the aptly titled Run DMC song «Word is Born» (1990).

Well I’m long gone, word is born…

word is born

«Word is born» means «truth be told» or «the truth is spoken», as in the Logos (Greek, for «word») of the New Testament. «In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.» (John 1:1, NIV) And then the Word says, «I am the way and the truth and the life,» in John 14:6. Don’t any of you go to church?
