525 Essential Words for SSAT & ISEE (Middle/Upper): With Roots/Synonyms/Antonyms/Usage and more… by J. Jonathan is a great workbook for kids in grades 6-10 to learn vocabulary. The workbook is geared toward the SSAT & ISEE tests. In the beginning of the book there is a table of contents. There is also a section in the beginning that details how the book works. It goes over Word Roots, Prefixes and Suffixes, Usage of the Word, Synonyms and Antonyms, Related Words, Pronunciations, and finally Practice Makes Perfect. There are review exercises at the end of each word set that tests what you have learned. In addition the answers are in the back of the book as well as a complete word list. I like how this workbook really breaks out how to learn new vocabulary. Highly recommend.

I recently purchased 504 Essential Words for SSAT and ISEE (Upper) in order to improve my vocabulary in a systematic way. So far, the book has proven to be an excellent guide for the journey, and I am ready and up for the challenge.

I absolutely love the format of this book. It has the 504 words divided into word sets that you can study, and then once you have taken the adequate time to study these words, there are review excercises which test the knowledge you have just gained. You can demonstrate through the completion of these excercises that you have learned the words in the word sets. Being able to identify synonyms and antonyms definitely is something that will lead to increasing your vocabularly, quickly and exponentially.

It is very interesting to know the roots of a particular word, and to be aware of them. It is helpful and fun to learn the roots of a given word in the process of adding to your vocabularly. I plan on working through these excercises paying particular attention to the prefixes and suffixes of the words in question, just as the book suggests. The brief definitions given in clear concise english are a great start for learning new words, and its very helpful that the part of speech is given in the word sets, along with examples of how the word is actually used.

I would give this book a 5 star rating, and recommend it to anyone taking the Upper level ISEE/SSAT’s or who just wants to build upon their vocabulary, like I do. You will find this book does everything that it says it will, and more.

I love this book! As a secondary school teacher , this resource is a Godsend. I love the fact that for each word, the pronunciation is provided as well as the meaning, part of speech, origin, synonyms, antonyms and sample sentences. Students can practice the set of words they have been assigned to study each week and the answer sheets at the back of the text make marking a breeze!

If you’re looking for a book that will help to improve vocabulary, this is it! It’s a great resource for us parents to keep our kids on track at home during online learning. The activities are fun, engaging and easy to follow. It provides much needed practice in building vocabulary through root words, synonyms, antonyms and word usage. The answer sheets will make things a lot easier if you’re a parent who may not have all the answers.

With 234 pages this is a fantastic guide written in an easy to read format. In the beginning of the book you will find an overview on how to boost your vocabulary quickly with the following subtopics: Word Roots, Prefixes/Suffixes, Usage of the Word, Synonyms/Antonyms, Related Words,Pronunciations, and finally, Practice makes Perfect.
With 42 review exercises set containing over a thousand Review Questions, you will certainly learn and retain new words, just like I did. The words themselves appear in sets, beginning with Set One, and are alphabetized. At the end of each set you will find a review exercise, which is broken out as follows: Match the word with its synonym, and then a fill in the blanks exercise to use the word in a sentence.
Overall, I found this guide to be quite helpful, it’s written in a clear, understandable style. It will certainly help anyone studying for the SSAT or ISEE Upper level test.
The author has done a thorough job of imparting vocabulary knowledge on to the reader, strongly recommend.

I am a big fan of this book and found it very helpful for SSAT Upper vocab prep. The book is designed to help students expand their vocabulary through the best learning systems to increase a student’s vocabulary.
The book is split into 42-word groupings. In these sections, each word is given a definition, pronunciation, word type, synonym, antonym, and further helpful information to ensure a full understanding of the word. At the end of each section, there is also a review test. This adds a lot to the book as a learning tool.
As an instructor it allows a clear way to help students work through their vocabulary but is also written in a clear format so that a student could work through it on their own. The end of the book supplies a full word list and answers to all the review questions.
I also tried some flashcard products, but this book beats them hollow!
Also, there is hardly anything available targeting the SSAT Upper level specifically.
Some of the words seemed a bit easy for the SSAT Upper level, but it really depends on what level you are starting from.
I found this book to be incredibly helpful in working with students and would highly recommend this to increase your vocabulary quickly!
