Sure, there are plenty of coffee shops in Logan Square, but a new one that sprouted up over Labor Day weekend serves pastries from its revered restaurant neighbor, Cellar Door Provisions. Four Letter Word Coffee, a coffee roaster in the city’s Back of the Yards neighborhood, debuted its first coffee shop and it’s a partnership with Kevin Heisner, the co-founder of Heisler Hospitality (Bad Hunter, Queen Mary, etc.).
Four Letter Word, 3022 W. Diversey Avenue, is a collaboration between Heisner, Ria Neri, and Eylem Ozkaya. They opened the first roastery in Istanbul and serve Turkish-style coffee and have single-origin coffees from South and Central Americas, plus Africa. While there’s plenty of global flair, Block Club Chicago reported that the shop still has plenty of local Chicago nods. Ownership promises they’ll have a full menu and expanded hours on September 10.
Heisner, as he’s known to do with his projects, designed the 500-square-foot space. It has seating for 20 and tables designed for customers to stand and quickly drink espresso shots. Tea drinkers should also have plenty to drink as Four Letter’s serving teas from Chicago’s-own Spirit Tea.
Four Letter’s owners are friends with Cellar Door’s owners. The restaurant, a darling among local critics, last year launched a dinner menu. It’s known for its baked items including its quiche.
Will another coffee option thrive in Logan Square, a neighborhood were there’s no shortage of caffeine with heavy hitters like Passion House and Gaslight? Four Letter Word is now open with abbreviated hours. Regular hours will start next week.
Four Letter Word Coffee, 3022 W. Diversey Avenue, regular hours starting September 10: weekdays from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.; weekends 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.; initial hours are 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Tuesday through Friday; 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, September 8 and Sunday September 9.

LOGAN SQUARE — Drip coffee and espresso are already flowing at Four Letter Word coffee shop, the latest spot to join a hot stretch of Diversey Avenue.
The effortlessly hip coffee shop has officially taken over the storefront at 3022 W. Diversey Ave., across the street from farm-to-table eatery Cellar Door Provisions and wine shop Diversey Wine.
It’s currently open with limited hours: from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. this Saturday and Sunday; 7 a.m.-3 p.m. Tuesday-Friday and 8 a.m.-4 p.m. the Saturday, Sept. 8 and Sunday, Sept. 9.

Right now, the coffee shop is only serving espresso, drip coffee and cold coffee. The full menu, including teas from Spirit Tea, pastries from neighbor Cellar Door Provisions and Turkish-style coffee — in addition to what they’re already serving — will launch on Sept. 10, according to co-owner Ria Neri.
Neri said she and her business partners and longtime friends, Eylem Ozkaya and Kevin Heisner, who co-owns Heisler Hospitality, chose the storefront on Diversey Avenue for its proximity to their friends’ businesses, Cellar Door Provisions and Diversey Wine.
“They’re our friends, and that’s really how this came into fruition was through that friendship,” Neri said.
“We admire each other and share the same ethos.”
RELATED: Four Letter Word Coffee Shop To Open In Logan Square
It’s Four Letter Word’s first brick-and-mortar coffee shop in Chicago.
The trio launched Four Letter Word in 2014, when they opened a coffee shop and roasting facility in Burgaz Island, Istanbul. Several years later, they opened a roasting facility in The Plant, an innovative production facility in Back of the Yards, where they still make coffee.

The tiered table in back was designed by Heisner; he also made the blue and white art hung on the back wall. Chicago-based ceramicist Grey Remedy supplied the coffee mugs for serving. The bulb light fixtures above the coffee bar were painted by a small hand-painted sign business called Finer Signs, also based in Chicago. Local housewares brand Manual is making custom bar stools for the space.
And, finally, Neri and her partners designed the exterior sign, which Pilsen-based fabrication shop Wayward Machine brought to life.
“It’s an ode to signal flags and boats [because] we started on an island in Istanbul,” Neri said.
On Friday afternoon, friends and customers filled the shop — just as Neri and her partners envisioned.
“It’s feel great,” Neri said of the opening. “It feels really good. I just haven’t come to that feeling yet, but I know I will when everything settles down.”
Of all the globe-spanning coffee brands out there, you are unlikely to come across one as unique as Four Letter Word. Started by a trio that met in Chicago, the coffee company began life as a roastery on an island off the coast of Turkey, where one of the owners was from. A few years later, they decided to open a roastery back in the States, and the Second City was just the right fit.
Now, in 2018, Four Letter Word is ready to open their first retail location in Chicago. The space itself is small, only 500 square feet, but is massive compared to their roughly 150-square-foot Turkish location (featured here in the Build-Outs of Summer four years ago). Tiny though it may be, the new 4LW is one of the most beautiful cafes we’ve seen this year on the Build-Outs of Summer. So let’s pop in and say Merhaba! to the brand new retail location of Four Letter Word in Chicago, Illinois.
As told to Sprudge by Ria Neri.
For those who aren’t familiar, will you tell us about your company?
Four Letter Word started in 2014 in Burgaz Island off the coast of Istanbul, Turkey, founded by Ria Neri, Kevin Heisner, and Eylem Ozkaya. We met in Chicago and have been friends for 22+ years.
The three of us had always wanted to start an adventure in coffee together so when Eylem moved back to Burgaz, where she is from, the appeal of roasting coffee on an island began to take shape and form. (I mean, who doesn’t want to hang out and work on an island?!)
Fast forward to 2016, we decided to spread the love and open a roasting space in Chicago, in a building called The Plant, a really smart space that houses a collaborative community of food businesses focusing on material reuse and closed loop systems.
Fast forward to 2018, the time felt right and ripe for a retail shop, finally! Yay!
Can you tell us a bit about the new space?
It’s small but cozy, around 500 square feet. We were able to squeeze in seating for approximately 20 people, plus three standing tables, ideal for a quick shot of espresso.
It’s definitely a space with a very personal touch; Eylem, Kevin, and I have items that came from our own homes: books, objects, art, and furniture.
One of the best parts about our space: we are right across the street from our friends!! Cellar Door Provisions—an amazing daytime cafe and night time bistro—will be providing us with pastries and Diversey Wine—a natural wine shop (who knows, maybe our shop can host a BYONW* from across the street someday?) We are not opposed.
*Bring Your Own Natural Wine
What’s your approach to coffee?
We ask the questions: Where did the coffee originate, what’s the variety, what was the process? Most importantly, what did the producer intend for this coffee to be? We respect the role of the producer. Our job as roasters is to not alter the inherent qualities of the coffee, but to translate them to the best of our ability.
What’s your target opening day?
Hopefully soon! Targeting the end of August.
Any machines, coffees, special equipment lined up?
Yes!! We are so excited to finally serve our stash of 2015 Gesha Village 1931. We travelled to Gesha Village in 2015 and got to cup this first harvest! Bought it, froze it (ala George Howell) and three years later, voila!
Also we have a juicy SL-28 Lactic from La Palma Y El Tucan from Colombia and several new lots of Long Miles Coffee from Burundi. Yum.
Are you working with craftspeople, architects, and/or creatives that you’d like to mention?
Kevin Heisner, our partner designed the space as well as provided the art for our walls.
And I would like to mention to please follow him on instagram at @shlumpr
